Masood Azhar was finally listed as global terrorist by the UN on 1st May 2019.
The sanctions came after a decade of persistent efforts by India. International pressure from US, UK and France meant China had to succumb to India’s demand.
Masood Azhar is the head of terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed. He has masterminded multiple gruesome attacks on Indian soil. In the aftermath of 2019 Pulwama Bomb Blasts in Indian Kashmir, Azhar publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. This led to heightened tensions between two nuclear-armed nations bringing India and Pakistan on the brink of war.
UN listing as a global terrorist enforces worldwide sanctions that includes asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo on Azhar. But is this enough to stop the LeT Chief?
A similar ban was enforced on another notorious terror kingpin Hafiz Saeed in 2008. But Saeed still preaches Jihad and broods new terrorists, under the protection of Pakistan.
