- Season 13 to focus on Penny’s mini-Sheldon?
Hailed as one of the best decisions ever made by a television network, CBS, the hit series went on for a span of 12 successful seasons. The award-winning series has been lauded for its intelligent writing, phenomenal cast, and good humour, with science at the centre of it all. The beauty of the series lay in its eccentric characters and their offbeat relationships, making a special place for itself in the hearts of viewers worldwide.
Thus, when the show came to a cessation in May 2019, fans were left devastated. There were petitions online to revive the show as well as a number of news portals churning out fake news about the continuation of the show. So, is ‘The Big Bang Theory’ really being revived? Will the next season focus on Penny having a genius child, giving a tough competition to ‘Young Sheldon’? Read on to find out.
‘The Big Bang Theory’: The king of quirk
The Big Bang Theory’ is considered one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows in the history of television. Set in Pasadena, California, the series was centred around a child prodigy and theoretical physicist, Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), his experimental physicist roommate with an IQ of 173, Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), their hot next-door neighbour, Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Rajesh Koothrapalli (Kunal Nayyar), who is an astrophysicist from New Delhi, and engineer Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), and focused on the their friendship. In the subsequent seasons, two new characters: Sheldon’s future wife, Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Balick), along with Howard’s future wife, Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Raunch), were added to the mix, thus, completing the cast.
The series about a few socially challenged physicists was naturally quite quirky and obsessed with the nerd culture. It refrained from making any controversial or political statements and probably for good reason. The series came to a banging end in 2019, with a finale that was watched and appreciated by millions.

The Big Bang Theory season 12: The finale
*SPOILERS*
The finale, “The Stockholm Syndrome”, saw Sheldon and Amy finally winning a Nobel Prize, and Leonard and Penny revealing their pregnancy to their friends. There was no birth or time leap as that revelation was what the show ended with. Most fans felt quite satisfied with the ending while others thought that Penny’s baby should have been shown and that another season was needed to show Sheldon and Amy having a child as well. There is plenty of fan fiction online that shows Penny’s child to be a genius and a worthy competitor to ‘Young Sheldon’. Honestly speaking, it is not a bad idea, is it?
A lot of viewers were also of the opinion that a lot more could have happened in the finale and that it was quite conventional and mellow for a show that thrived on quirky. So, can there be another season to explore these plausible storylines?

A season 13 to focus on Penny’s genius child?
The idea of a season 13 of the series is not that far-fetched. Kaley Cuoco, in an interview last year, said, “I don’t wanna leave, I don’t wanna leave. I said it. I don’t wanna leave. Everyone’s doing rebooting. We might as well do it in, like, a year. I’m fine with that!”.
Director, Mark Cendrowski also hinted at the possibility of a season 13 in an interview with Forbes saying, “That’s not to say that there may not be something down the line, but I don’t think anyone wanted to jump into the next season and spin someone off immediately”. He further said, “That doesn’t mean that won’t happen and, in a couple of years, maybe it’s a character or a couple of characters that catch up within a couple of years. Who knows if it will happen. There’s plenty to explore with their lives and characters moving forward”.
This gives fans plenty of hope to see a possible mini-Sheldon, in the form of Penny and Leonard’s child, giving a tough competition to young Sheldon and Penny’s struggles in raising him. It will be exciting to see this storyline unfold.
