‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8: A quick recap
Executive producer Julie Plec promised an “emotional experience” with ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8 and that’s exactly what she delivered. With the Salvatore brothers facing the devil himself, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ concluded its eight-season run, making fans sob and grin at the same time.
In Season 8, we got to see Stefan, Caroline, and Alaric team up with Bonnie, to track down Damon and Enzo, who are on a killing spree after being kidnapped and enslaved by the Siren Sybil. Fighting and surviving hellfires and demons, the season ends with Elena and Damon finally getting to live happily ever after. But, Stefan pays the ultimate price with his life and finally finds redemption and Lexi in his afterlife.
Damon is haunted by the thought of him never getting a chance to meet Stefan again. That is when Elena says, “But he’s wrong because I know peace exists. It lives in everyone we hold dear. That is the promise of peace — that one day, after a long life, we find each other again”. And they finally do. Stefan opens the Salvatore House door, and there stands Damon. “Hello, brother”, says Damon and with the reunion of the brothers, the screen fades to white.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 9: Somerhalder and Dobrev to reprise as Damon and Elena
For ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 9, most of the main cast is expected to reprise their roles. Although Ian Somerhalder had jokingly said he might not be able to play the youthful vampire anymore, who are we kidding? Imagining the fan-favourite vampire show without the smouldering Somerhalder is a sin.

The cast members haven’t confirmed anything yet, but fans expect the return of Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore, Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert, Kat Graham as Bonnie Bennett, Zach Roerig as Matt Donovan, Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman, Candice King as Caroline Forbes, Nathalie Kelley as Sybil, Kristen Gutoskie as Seline, Demetrius Bridges as Dorian Williams, Allison Scagliotti as Georgie Dowling, and Michael Malarkey as Enzo.
There is a small question mark on the return of Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore as he was seen dying. But, the love-hate chemistry between the brothers is what differentiated the show from any other vampire romance. So, fingers crossed!
Once greenlit ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 9 is expected to have 22 episodes, like the majority of its previous seasons. In April 2016, Somerhalder had to apologise for tweeting that ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is going to end after season 8. He later indicated that the series could continue. Moreover, The CW hasn’t officially pulled the plug on ‘The Vampire Diaries’.
How will the story unfold in ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 9
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8 might seem like the best possible way to end the show. With the characters reuniting and the Salvatore brothers making peace with a HUG, every love story seemed to have found redemption.
Some fan theories suggest that ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 9 will resume from where season 8 ended. Season 9 will explore the next chapter after Bonnie travels the world, Matt runs for Mayor of Mystic Falls, and Caroline and Ric open a boarding school for “gifted” children like them, while some fans theorised that the plotline will be a brand new one, with some new faces. In either case, Damon and Stefan will continue to be the protagonists of the story.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 9: When is it releasing?
The CW President Mark Pedowitz announced the renewal of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ for season 8 on March 11, 2016. Naturally, the renewal announcement for season 9 was expected in March 2020. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen, the COVID crisis being one of the reasons behind that. ‘The Vampire Diaries’ churned out not one, but two spinoffs – ‘The Originals’ and ‘Legacies’.
Julie Plec, writer and producer, in conversation with “Deadline” said:
“I do not have a spinoff in the works but yes I have spinoff ideas in my brain. I think Ian and Paul have said it best recently that no one is going to find them credible in about six months as eternally youthful vampires. So any spinoff idea involving those two probably are pipe dreams”.
Filming and production are still at a halt and new shooting guidelines have also not been officially laid out. Thus, considering the uncertainty around the already greenlit projects and shows, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 9 could be a distant dream, but not an impossible one. Do you agree?
