We finally know what is happening with ‘The O.C.’ reboot and fans are in two minds about it.
A series that ruled over television during its run was Fox’s incredibly popular teen drama, ‘The O.C.’. Even though the show only lasted for a short while, it managed to win the hearts of its teen audiences with an exceptionally attractive cast, melodramatic script, romantic angles, and over-the-top plotlines. ‘The O.C.’ was undoubtedly teen television at its best. It came like a breath of fresh air at a time when there was hardly any content for teenagers and glued young viewers to their TV screens. Despite the fact that many popular youth dramas like ‘Beverly Hills 90210’, ‘Gilmore Girls’, ‘Gossip Girl’, and even ‘That’s So Raven’ got their reboots in the past few years, ‘The O.C.’ has been left out. So, when will we get to see our favorite residents of The O.C. back on screen, if at all?

“Welcome to the O.C., b***h!”
There has not been a more iconic line than this. With its remarkable pilot, ‘The O.C.’ opened with amazing ratings in 2003. The series revolved around foster brothers Ryan (Ben McKenzie), a brilliant yet burdened teenager, and the socially-inadept jokester Seth (Adam Brody), as they tried to adapt to their lives in the posh society of Orange County.

The series was full of pop-culture references and meta-humour that blended perfectly with its usual dramatic tone. The series has till date been telecasted in more than 50 countries worldwide and is still considered to be one of the best teen dramas ever created.
The series is also responsible for coining the portmanteau word ‘Chrismukkah’ which merges two festivals – Christmas (Christianity) and Hanukkah (Judaism), a legendary neology that has gone down in popular culture.
Despite having impressed both viewers and critics during its first 2 seasons, ‘The O.C.’ was unable to maintain its quality of writing in the subsequent seasons and saw a rapid decline in the ratings. And this is why The O.C. got cancelled at the end of season 4 in 2007.

‘The O.C.’ reboot: Is the series really coming back?
Peter Gallagher, who played the role of Ryan and Seth’s adoptive father in the series, echoed his interest in rebooting ‘The O.C.’ saying that he would love to play his character of Sandy Cohen again.
Rachel Bilson, in a 2019 interview, revealed that even though she was open to doing a reboot of the hit teen drama, she knew a lot of cast members who were not of the same opinion. She exclaimed, “I mean, I would do it. I’ll tell you about three people that wouldn’t do it — five people? Six people? Eight people, let’s be honest”. Just as she said, Mischa Barton and Adam Brody are reportedly uninterested in reprising their original roles.
In 2019, showrunner Josh Schwartz spoke about The O.C. reboot rumours saying that for the makers, the series had ended back in 2007 and the story was complete. So this was not something they had in mind ever.
Michael Thorn of Fox entertainment disclosed in an interview with “Deadline” this year, “The O.C. will not happen despite my deep passion for it to come back. No one is available, unfortunately. I would be lying if I said I didn’t ask every June”. Taking into consideration the response of the Fox executives, showrunners, as well as the actors, as of now there seems to be no possibility of the show returning.
The unexpected reaction of fans to this news
Ever since it was revealed that ‘The O.C.’ reboot is not happening, fans have been in two minds. On one hand, they are disappointed that they will not get to see their favourite characters again onscreen, on the other hand, they are glad because this decision will preserve the show’s original feel. A lot of its viewers are of the opinion that the series was ended well and a reboot would be absolutely needless.
This opinion may differ from person to person, but we still think that it will be nice to have the entire cast reunited once again, even if it is for some event other than a reboot. Don’t you think so?
