Gillian Anderson will not reprise her role in ‘The X-Files’. So, who should step in her shoes if there is a reboot? Let’s explore our options!
Whether or not you’re familiar with ‘The X-Files’, you’ll know it has a plot related to aliens and UFOs. What started as a deeply compelling series and discussed paranormal activities, mutants, and government conspiracies, had an unexpected final season. Season 11 was so incomprehensible that any hopes that fans had for ‘The X-Files’ reboot were crushed.
- ‘The X-Files’ had a very convoluted season 11
- Gillian Anderson doesn’t want to play Scully anymore
- Who, according to fans, can replace her?
‘The X-Files’ was a pioneer of serialized drama and, when it aired in the 90s, it was unlike anything on television. The show starred David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, a conspiracy theorist, and FBI Special Agent who believed in aliens. Gillian Anderson played skeptic and doctor Dana Scully, a formidable force to reckon with and the show’s voice of reason.
Together, the duo investigated unusual paranormal cases in a way that could be both scary and funny. Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully went on to become the heart and brains of the series. She was empowering to watch and stood out at a time when women were rarely given such roles to play. Though, unfortunately, Gillian Anderson is over the series and will not reprise her role as Scully in ‘The X-Files’ anymore. But a new actress might happily step into her shoes if a revival were to materialize.
‘The X-Files’ had a very convoluted season 11
‘The X-Files’ is a prime example of a compelling show that has turned into a wishy-washy tale of confusion. The many seasons of the series stretched old plots and are what eventually led to its complicated last season. Their approach towards the aliens’ conspiracy theory was interesting at first, but they certainly took it way too far.
The season finale changed everything the show was building up to. The final episode follows Scully and Mulder as they’re on the lookout for their son William. Fans believed Mulder to be William’s father but they discover that he isn’t and that the cigarette smoking man is. He impregnated Scully with alien science to create the first superhuman child, and the show uses flashbacks to explain it. To add to that controversial information, you also find out that Scully is pregnant again, but with Mulder’s child.
Now the series has often addressed aliens and inexplicable cases of unearthly activity, but this conclusion was anything but convincing. It’s not the end you’re looking for after staying by the series for almost a decade.
What character are you from The X-Files (Quiz)
Gillian Anderson doesn’t want to play Scully in ‘The X-Files’ anymore
Viewers have often talked about Scully’s strength as a character. Series creator Chris Carter wanted his characters to reverse gender stereotypes and Scully to be the rational one. It’s why Mulder was a conspiracist and a believer of the paranormal, while Scully was the ultimate voice of reason. Dana Scully was fierce and smart, she trusted her judgement above anyone else’s and didn’t get manipulated by her superiors.
She relied on science for answers, but still had an open mind, and believed in both, fact and faith. Her character was unique and Gillian Anderson did justice to it throughout the series. Anderson’s decision to discontinue playing Scully in ‘The X-Files’ earned her a lot of criticism though. It’s obvious that fans would be upset.
“It’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is”, Gillian Anderson said in a report posted by “The Hollywood Reporter”. “I’m finished, and that’s the end of that”.
It’ll be really hard to see Gillian Anderson being replaced by a new actress in ‘The X-Files’ is a reboot is planned. But she has no qualms about her decision and is quite busy with her acting career. Presently, Anderson stars in Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’, a teen comedy-drama in which she plays a sex therapist.
Who, according to fans, can replace her?
It’s true that the final season became quite absurd, with its multiple rewriting of major conspiracies. Season 11 dialled back from its previously conceived apocalyptic conclusion where the world was infected with an alien virus. We didn’t get to see the end-of-humanity arc being explored, but that could be the premise of ‘The X-Files’ reboot if the creators are planning on continuing the show.
Since Gillian Anderson will not be stepping in Scully’s shoes anymore, fans have been wondering which actor could. We have a theory and assure you it isn’t as disappointing as the end of season 11. Fans think that Jennifer Beals should wear Scully’s hat, if and when creator Chris Carter decides to work on ‘The X-Files’ reboot! And surprisingly, the series was originally meant to cast Jennifer Beals in the role of Scully anyway.
But at the time, Beals believed Gillian Anderson was better suited for the part in the cult sci-fi series. It’s been years since the series ended, and it’s quite possible her feelings have changed. We hope the creators think seriously about ‘The X-Files’ reboot even if just to fix the ending of season 11! William could be humanity’s saviour and Mulder and Scully could help stop the alien invasion from happening? The possibilities are endless.
