‘The Vampire Diaries’ ended with Damon Salvatore turning into a human being, but he’s not happy with the finale. Will Ian Somerhalder return on ‘Legacies’ to change the ending?
Five years ago, when ‘The Vampire Diaries’ ended, Damon Salvatore (played by Ian Somerhalder) became human again. We all think he must now be living a happy life with Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev). But how did Damon feel about that human life, Ian Somerhalder weighed in a few years back.

What happened on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ finale?
To briefly remind you of the last episode of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8, Episode 16, Elena went to med school, and then returned to Mystic Falls because she wanted to grow old in the same place where she found her love.
Elena’s voiceover said that Damon is still worried he’ll never see Stefan again, even after their long and happy life together. He feels that he’ll never find peace even though Elena was sure that he’s wrong because peace exists and lives in everything we hold dear.
Damon’s final words in the series were “Hello, brother“.
Ian Somerhalder, two years back, said at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming in Australia that he thought Damon spent his human life being grateful, feeling warm, and not worrying about other supernatural creatures attacking him.
In the spin-off series of TVD, ‘The Originals‘ fans saw Dr Elena Salvatore having opened a family practice in Mystic Falls.
Julie Plec, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ universe creator had already spoken about Elena and Damon’s kids when she was plugging the upcoming spin-off ‘Legacies’.
“So, [Elena] has her family clinic in the town square. You know I think that when Damon and Elena finally had children, they’d be younger kids by now. So maybe the spin-off of this spin-off can be the Salvatore children!”
‘Legacies’ … Please Do It.
Fans are rooting for the joint spin-off of both ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Originals’. Both the shows have already mentioned Elena and Damon’s kids. We saw Josie Saltzman first referencing the Salvatore kids this way on ‘Legacies’ Season 1 Episode 10
“Damon Salvatore has been as generous as he can be, but he and Elena have kids of their own that they need to take care of.”
The good part was, we got an actual name for one of Damon and Elena’s kids. They have a daughter named Stefanie Salvatore. She is named in honour of Stefan.
Fans have hoped to hear more about Stefanie Salvatore, and her parents Damon and Elena. Julie Plec actually addressed Stephanie Salvatore in an interview regarding ‘Legacies’ Season 1:

“I’d have to figure out why a child of theirs [Damon and Elena] would be supernatural and in boarding school. But it’s on my list of things to think about.”
Fans suggest that Stephanie can appear in the show as human after all Mystic Falls is her home.
We might see Damon and Elena’s daughter on ‘Legacies’, but Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev might not appear together.
Ian Somerhalder not happy with ‘The Vampire Diaries’ finale
Ian Somerhalder opened up again on how ‘The Vampire Diaries’ ended:
“Two years … wow. I think all finales are what they are. It’s a winding down of an eight-year emotional saga, for the most part. I wish that we had been able to shoot a two-hour finale and lose the retrospective, but it was powerful the way we finished.”
Ian Somerhalder emphasised that he feels Damon should’ve gotten a happy ending with Elena. After all, he had done horrible things to her. But the finale happened that way.
Damon entering ‘Legacies’?
When Ian shared a Damon vampire photo during the time of ‘Legacies’ Season 1, we thought he might actually bring Damon onto the spin-off. But that didn’t happen since Damon would be human in this timeline, and not a vampire.
Last time we saw Ian Somerhalder on ‘V-Wars’, but, unfortunately, the series was cancelled after the first season. Considering that Damon is still alive in the ‘Legacies’ timeline, we can always reserve hope that Ian Somerhalder will someday resume his character as Damon and stop by at some point.
