Buffy kick-started Sarah Michelle Geller’s career!
‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ still maintains a huge fan following who are keeping an eagle eye on every possibility for a reboot. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s career as an actor was just heating when she landed up as Buffy in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ series in 1997.
Slowly and steadily, she established herself among the most famous young actors of the era. She became one of the most sought after teen star and got roles in several teen dramas and horror flicks including ‘Scream 2’, ‘I Know What you Did Last Summer’, and ‘Cruel Intentions’.
Though she appeared in many shows and movies then, the role that made waves was her character as Buffy Summers in 7 seasons of the Joss Whedon series. It was a career-defining role for her.
One of her diehard fans wrote on Reddit, expressing disappointment over her career graph despite hitting the right chord as Buffy Summers.
“It seems like she was the complete package, she showed great acting range throughout BtVS and then seemed to be the highlight of every role that she was in around that time (‘Cruel Intentions’, ‘The Grudge’, even ‘Scooby-Doo’).”
He further added, “She was gorgeous and has aged pretty well in my opinion. I know her prime was a bit before the internet took off, it makes me wonder if she was part of some kind of scandal. She has had a couple of shows that have ended quickly (I actually liked ‘Ringer’) and hasn’t been in a movie in over 5 years”.
Why Sarah Michelle Geller’s career doomed?
By the time the series was heading to call it a day, Gellar expressed frustration with just how all-consuming the show had become for her. She started when she was just 18 years old but things changed in her life by the time ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ ended. She was now 26-year-old woman, married to a fellow teen acting heartthrob, Freddie Prinze Jr.
The pressures and demanding filming schedule were harder to fit into her more mature work-life balance. Perhaps that is one of the reasons that Gellar and Prinze have made careful work-life balance a major part of their marriage and parenting decisions.
In 2011, Sarah Michelle Gellar was back at The CW to star in the series ‘Ringer’, alongside Nestor Carbonell and Ioan Gruffudd. Unlike Buffy, the series was cancelled just after one season because of low viewership.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s attempt to revive her career in prime time TV wasn’t any more successful. She tried her hand in the CBS sitcom called ‘The Crazy Ones’ but that also lasted only for one season before CBS pulled it off the air. Gellar, despite being the hottest potential teen star of her times, hasn’t found a career-defining role since Buffy.
Sarah loses her role to a teen star in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot
Fans are still waiting for ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot and are excited to see Sarah reprieve her role as Buffy. But, some sections also feel sceptical of her return in the reboot. They doubt her ability to create the same magic again.
The CW may cast new teen star as Buffy for the new generation of fans. Reboots are a thing these days but are equally risky to pull off. Though nothing is official about ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot, if the rumours are true, it won’t be easy to match the chemistry of the original cast.
