Yes, it sounds as absurd to us also, but it happened. Aaron Paul plays Caleb in Westworld, and neither the world nor the character shares anything with the Breaking Bad universe. Yet, a scene in Season 3 of Westworld brought the world of Jesse Pinkman back to Aaron Paul.
Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad makes a cameo in Westworld.
Westworld dropped its Season 3 in the mid-March of 2020. The show that gripped the audience from their guts from the beginning received critical appreciation and much love from the audience for the first two seasons. The Third Season of the show was received equally well by the audience.
However, one scene in the Season 3 Episode 7 “Passed Pawn” left the viewers wondering. Aaron Paul, who’s known for his character Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad and El Camino, plays Caleb in Westworld. Even though there is no connection between Aaron Paul’s character of Jesse Pinkman and Caleb, still Caleb’s memories of Breaking Bad freaked out the audience.
“Passed Pawn” reveals the truth about Caleb.
The episode “Passed Pawn” makes several revelations about Caleb, his past life, his existence, and his true identity. We learn that everything we know about Caleb is either false or is filtered. We also learn that Caleb himself isn’t aware of his real identity, and he too is exploring it at the same time. As the revelation takes place, Caleb’s memories of Russian secret mission begin fading.

He starts learning about his true past as the images from his life in the US starts appearing over his conditioning of the Russian mission. In the midst of this revelation, an image in Caleb’s brain takes him away from Westworld back to the world of Breaking Bad, and in the skin of Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). This happens through his memory of his two best friends in Breaking Bad and El Camino, Skinny Pete and Badger.
Aaron Paul recalls Skinny Pete and Badger in a scene of Westworld.
While Caleb was gradually seeing all the memories from his past, we see him walking past a building covered by Graffiti. The most interesting thing was the highlighted names of Skinny Pete and Badger written as “Skin” and “Bager” on the building. This could have been a coincidence if not for the fact that Westworld is the show of extreme detailing. Also, the names come into focus at the very moment Caleb walks past through the building.
Skinny and Badger were two best buddies of Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad. And the same two helped him in escaping the police and world of crime in El Camino. In Breaking Bad, Skinny and Badger always had Jesse’s back no matter if he wanted them to help him sell the drugs, or if to cure his depression.
There’s no doubt about their friendship in Breaking Bad. But the cameo of their names in Westworld is certainly a wild call-back. Possibilities are that the Westworld creators and Aaron Paul decided to pay homage to Jesse Pinkman’s character from Breaking Bad. And if not, it can be a plain coincidence as well.
