‘WandaVision’ finally equips Monica Rambeau with super-powers
We first met Monica Rambeau as a kid in Captain Marvel, played by Akira Akbar. Monica’s mother Maria and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), later Captain Marvel, used to be co-pilot cum friends cum sisters. Monica used to admire her superhero aunt.
Cut to ‘WandaVision’, almost three decades later, we meet Monica as a SWORD agent. We instantly fall in love with her. A strong woman of will, determination, and voice. She was already a superhero, all she needed was some powers.
Monica had already come in contact with the Hex when it sucked her in while investigating the missing Westview case. She played by Wanda’s sitcom rules for two episodes, and then Wanda threw her out on finding out her truth. But half of the work was done. As Dr Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) explains to Monica when she speaks of going back into Wanda’s anomaly:
“You can’t go back into the Hex … You’ve gone through the boundary twice already, Monica. The energy inside has re-written your cells on a molecular level twice. It’s changing you.”Darcy
Ignoring Darcy’s warning, Monica Rambeau opted to try and enter the Hex using SWORD’s most advanced Space Rover, which failed miserably. But the lady of determination ran into the barrier. What we saw next was Monica transitioning through the boundary of Hex.
The Hex split Monica Rambeau into four different forms, rewrote the entire biology of her body, re-fixed her, and swallowed her in. When she opened her eyes after entering the Hex, they glowed with a blue colour.
At that time, we knew, Monica is now a superhero, named Photon, or Spectrum, or maybe Pulsar, or why not Captain Marvel?
Well, she had many heroic names in Marvel comics, we must wait to see what MCU names her.
What are the powers of the first Captain Marvel aka Monica Rambeau?
Yes, Monica Rambeau was the first female Captain Marvel in Marvel comics, she took the name after the death of the original Captain Marvel aka Mar-Vell. At that time Carol Danvers was going by the name of Ms Marvel.
Monica Rambeau first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 in 1982. Rambeau was exposed to extradimensional energy, which became the source of her powers. Not to exaggerate, her powers in the comics are absolutely god-tier, making her one of the most powerful superheroes in Marvel comics.
Rambeau’s key power is that she can control and harness the powers of all kinds of energy and rays present in the electromagnetic spectrum. She can control gamma rays, ultraviolet radiation, electricity, infrared radiation, x-rays, microwaves, and radio waves.
She can change her form and switch from one energy-form to another at will and in no time – like becoming a massive bolt of lightning.
Rambeau can use and exhibit all the properties of any energy while she is in that form. She can absorb any energy and shoot it back at the opponent. Rambeau’s powers also include the ability to fire blast different energies.
You’ll be speechless to know that Rambeau has the power to control and manipulate light. Using that power, she can become invisible, or make herself look like anyone by altering the light around her. Rambeau, in the comics, is capable of walking through solid matter while in pure energy form. She can even fly at the speed of light – you heard that right – at the speed of light!
Marvel has finally introduced Monica Ramebau’s superhero form in MCU with ‘WandaVision’ – but fans are wondering what her superpowers are?
After almost dying and losing her powers at one point in the comics, Rambeau returned as an almost immortal being with more powers – as if she was falling short of having enough superhero characteristics.
What will be Rambeau’s superpowers in ‘WandaVision’?
We know it for a fact that MCU tones down the powers of all the superheroes. None of the Avengers or even the villains have exhibited the level of powers they carry in the comics. MCU is bound to do that to make things more realistic.
Monica Rambeau’s superhero origin is also different in MCU with her becoming a superhero in ‘WandaVision’. In comics, she had no relation to Carol initially, but in MCU they have a history.
So we have reasons to believe that Marvel will treat Rambeau a bit differently in MCU than her comics persona. Given that, Monica Rambeau will have lesser powers in ‘WandaVision’ and MCU. Flying at light speed, becoming invisible, walking through matter, harnessing some forms of energies, might be some of Rambeau’s powers in MCU.
We’ll soon know Monica Rambeau’s actual powers in MCU with ‘WandaVision’ episode 8. But what do you think, what will be her powers in the Disney+ show? Comment down your picks.
