‘Better Call Saul’ was a risky next step for Vince Gilligan after a show like ‘Breaking Bad’. But it’s probably the former’s finale that’s keeping the writer-director awake.
Name a show that’s as iconic as ‘Breaking Bad‘ – yeah, you can’t. Walter White’s story and journey created ripples of great magnitude when it released and also ended with a bang that would never be forgotten.
- ‘Breaking Bad’s’ iconic impact on viewers
- ‘Better Call Saul’s’ run so far
- Will Vince Gilligan live up to his claims of a better finale?
And while Vince Gilligan, the show’s writer-director, cooked up a finale that will never be forgotten, his prequel-sequel ‘Better Call Saul’ isn’t far behind either.
Passing on the mantle after ‘Breaking Bad’
A lot of scepticism followed when ‘Better Call Saul‘ was announced – the so-called prequel, which was set to be a sequel. While ‘Better Call Saul’ has its own characters and storyline, mostly dating before the events of ‘Breaking Bad’, there are still some scenes that are set post its timeline.
For most fans, it was a very simple question – “Will ‘Better Call Saul’ ever be able to replace what ‘Breaking Bad’ has created?” Truth is, it created its own niche and segment, with people clearly being able to distinguish between the two powerhouse characters – ‘Heisenberg’, who was a meth lord and Saul Goodman, the quintessential, undefeatable criminal lawyer. Both shows have garnered a huge fan following, but it’s always about the finale, isn’t it?
Vince Gilligan’s finale claims
Not so long ago, in an interview, Vince Gilligan had mentioned how he was working on creating a ‘Better Call Saul’ finale that would top ‘Breaking Bad’s’. Now, there’s a reason why that could be a tall claim. Firstly, ‘Breaking Bad’s’ final episode was nothing short of epic. The episode gathered over 10 million views worldwide when it aired, and the show is still listed in the top 10 shows in the US till date.
Given that Saul’s court theatrics and the larger than life cases he handles have been thrilling audiences for 5 seasons, trying to wager this controversial debate between the two masterpieces can be tricky. Some critics have gone as far as to claim that no show could ever top what ‘Breaking Bad’ did, and that’s probably why this conundrum is even riskier when the writer-director is the same person.
The endless White vs. Saul debate
Millions of fans across the globe have compared the two shows on various platforms – from YouTube videos to social media posts, and even memes. Some say Saul has a better personality, while others are simply in love with Heisenberg’s grit and sheer badass-ness. Truth be told, both characters are so distinct that comparing them would be like weighing oranges and frogs.
On the same lines, comparing the two shows, and possibly their finales would also be quite a task. One could argue that the ‘Better Call Saul’ ending, which is scheduled for 2021, could be a lot more upbeat and edgy than ‘Breaking Bad’s’ was, but a true Walter White fan can be just as hard to persuade.

Vince Gilligan’s biggest challenge
Proving his own words right could be Vince Gilligan’s biggest challenge yet. For ‘Better Call Saul’s’ ending to be as memorable and heralded as its predecessor’s, Gilligan is going to have to pull out the big guns. Or in this case, his best defence. No doubt, the creator could be losing sleep over this, and might also be preparing himself to face his most critiqued work yet.
Now, whether Gilligan lives up to it or not is a mystery one will be able to uncover only in 2021. Until then, let the debates continue!
