Before coming up with the idea of Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan was in the state of not feeling so lucky about his career. His previous ventures like The X-file and The Lone Gunmen, where he served as Writer Producer and co-creator respectively, either completed their run or were cancelled by 2002. From then on, Vince Gilligan remained unemployed. In the void of unemployment, he and his friend kept cracking jokes about new gigs. They joked about giving up and building a meth lab in a Winnebago for the purpose of driving around the country while leaving their dreams behind. That joke, as revealed by Vince himself, gave him the idea of Breaking Bad and Walter White.
Vince Gilligan found it hard to pitch the joke to Networks
The show you now remember as the greatest show ever made went through a lot of processing before becoming Breaking Bad. While shaping the idea of Breaking Bad and Walter White from a joke, Vince Gilligan focused mainly on the reason that would make an ordinary and responsible citizen break all rules and begin to commit crimes as such of cooking Meth. He wanted the show to be a detailed character study of Walter White and the transformation he goes through in becoming the ruthless kingpin Heisenberg.
Such an idea was hard for Vince to pitch to any channel or Network. But finally, when AMC agreed to the idea, we got the first season of the show that turned out to be the greatest show for Vince, for AMC, and all the cinema lovers.
