The high-octane and physics-defying Fast and Furious Cinematic Universe is taking cues from Avengers Infinity Saga to reach similar levels of success. Is splitting a movie in two halves really the recipe for success?
Fast and Furious 10 would be reportedly split in two parts. But it is not the first movie to do so. It seems that the makers have found the perfect recipe to success. It seems that Fast and Furious is highly inspired from Marvel’s Avengers Infinity Saga that outdid all the previous box office records. Will the franchise be able to reach the billion-dollar mark?

- For the love of fans or for the love of money?
- From a world trilogies to the world of duets
‘Fast and Furious 9’ is yet to hit the cinemas but Vin Diesel is already talking about the 10th part. Fast and Furious 9, or simply F9, is the second part in the “last trilogy to end the saga”. But Vin Diesel thinks one movie (Fast and Furious 10) would not be enough to end the long-running franchise.
Vin Diesel talked about this in the latest edition of Total Film magazine (via Games Radar). The 52-year-old actor stated that he “started planning for Fast 10 before we started filming Fast 9.”
From Trilogies to Duets
This pattern looks very familiar when we turn our gaze to 2019 hit series, Avengers Infinity Saga. The evil deeds of the Mad Titan, Thanos, were split into two movies. While the first movie set up the story and left people with a major cliffhanger, the second proved to be the bread-winner with $2.7 billion at the box office. Avengers and Thanos together took the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a new high after breaking Avatar’s record.

Earlier, major Hollywood movies were all set as trilogies. An iconic example is The Lord of the Rings. But the new success trends are all about prequel (instead of sequels) and duets instead of triplets. A two-part movie, just like Fast and Furious 10, has an element that appeals to the fans— a cliffhanger. As a general rule, the first half of the movie leaves the fans wondering about a possible storyline for the second half of it. The concept is gaining such popularity that rumours say Netflix’s TV series Stranger Things season 4 will also be in two parts.

Fast and Furious 10: for the love of fans or for the love of money
Subsequently, Vin Diesel goes on to explain that the Fast and Furious 10 movie will be split into two parts “for the fans”. In his own words, “And for the fans, should Fast 10 parts one and two be the conclusion, it would be nice for this world to continue for generations to come.” Vin Diesel talked about the 10th instalment being in two parts while discussing the Fast and Furious’ growing universe with spin-offs such as Hobbs and Shaw.
But is it really “for fans” that Fast and Furious 10 will be in two parts? Owing to the various examples of two-parts movies that have been box office hits, it is highly unlikely that the decision would solely be based on fans’ interests. Yes, it will surely be an interesting watch, but the two parts might not just be for the single motive of entertainment.
