If you are a The Sopranos fan like me, you know how the series ended in 2006. Tony, sitting in the diner with his family looks hopeful about the future, all the while feeling a bit paranoid inside about the guy stalking the room in a ‘Members Only’ jacket.

The show abruptly cuts to black. What happened? Does the abrupt blackness mean sudden death? Is he killed? Ultimately, it is up to us viewers to make what we want of it.
Well, not anymore. It was back in 2018 when The Sopranos creator Davis Chase finally decided to cut to the ‘chase’ and announced a spin-off movie. Based on the Newark riots in the 60s’, The Many Saints of Newark is actually a prequel of the series and is set to release on September 25th, 2020.
The movie is reportedly about Tony Soprano’s dad Giovanni ‘Johnny Boy’ Soprano, his mother Livia, and uncle Junior. The theatrical release of the movie has been put on hold due to the pandemic, but a little bird told us that a new season of The Sopranos might be in the pipeline.
HBO president hints at a new season after the prequel
After the death of James Gandolfini, who originally played Tony Soprano, his son Michael Gandolfini is now going to be the new Tony Soprano.
When asked if the network will be expanding the film into a series, HBO president Casey Bloys told Deadline at Television Critics Association, “I keep saying ‘never say never.’ There are not many discussions about it at the moment but I will stay open for the new possibilities.”
Effect of Covid-19 on The Sopranos
The Sopranos went off air 13 years back. But just like The Godfather, The Sopranos has proven to be one of the most evergreen TV series of all time. In a recent report revealed by Warner Media, The Sopranos witnessed a 179% surge in the viewership on HBO Now and HBO Max.
When the news reached David Chase, he told The Variety, “It blew my mind. One thing I was always worried about that Gen-Z won’t find The Sopranos relevant enough for reruns. So, I am elated that it still is contemporary.”
What made The Sopranos a legendary show?
The Sopranos has paved the way for the network’s world dominance with deeply flawed protagonists and twisted storylines. The model it followed has become the de facto standard for high-quality television. The Sopranos is not just a crime and mob thriller, it has touched a wide population’s heart as the story revolves around family.
James Gandolfini in an interview with Bob Simon said,
“The Sopranos became so successful because it deals with children, parents, and family. It also emphasizes on loyalty.” Whether Tony is dead or alive, one thing is clear, The Sopranos legacy will live long.
