What was the plot hole?
The existence of plot holes are quite common in TV series especially in prequels. While most plot holes are fixable, some are not. But lucky for Breaking bad fans, creators of the series have managed to fix a major plot hole in the prequel series Better Call Saul.

In the latest episode of the series, titled ‘JMM’, Jimmy and Kim build a legal firewall with help from Huell. As Jimmy is compromised by his client, Kim sets things straight with hers.
Meanwhile, Kim and Jimmy tie the knot in the most unblissful, unromantic manner. Deciding to get married in a haste and not-so-joyful legal ceremony one morning before work, is probably not the ideal way to start a marriage. But like always, there was a bigger plan.
The history behind Jimmy’s marriages
The main idea behind this was to protect the couple from testifying against each other, if Jimmy’s shenanigans as Saul ever caught up to him. However despite their cold wedding, the couple very much had romantic feelings for each other, even after Jimmy confessed to have been working with the cartel.
A very interesting character detail was presented during the staged ceremony: Jimmy’s two previous marriages. Although the events haven’t been elaborated upon in the episode and Kim’s non- reaction proves that she was already aware of being Jimmy’s “third time’s a charm”, the addition to the episode clarifies an inconsistency creator of the series, Vince Gilligan had been pondering over ever since the beginning of the prequel.

What is the connection between the two series?
In Breaking bad, Saul tells Walter White that he caught his second wife cheating on him with his step dad, which clearly establishes at least 2 marriages in the past. At the time when Gilligan was writing Saul’s storyline, a lot of questions were raised about his extensive marriage history.
The only time the marriage was spoken in Better Call Saul was when Jimmy describes getting some revenge from his first wife who also cheated on him. But this only partially explains the missing chapter in Jimmy’s history.
Final conclusion
While most prequels and sometimes sequels miss out on matching up with their parent series, Better Call Saul has been appreciated for successfully navigating around the ex-wives plot hole.
Unlike the previous wives, Kim is a separate character who has an important role in Jimmy’s on-screen story. Nevertheless, the spin-off has been recognised as dealing with the missing wives remarkably well. The “dissolution” line confirms that Jimmy has had two wives in the past.
However, in the same episode the nameless exes are supposedly unimportant to the story when both Kim and Jimmy fail to elaborate on the reference. This makes it clear that the ex-wives might not play an important role as Kim would, as viewers will explore further into the endings of both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
