‘The X-Files’ revival will have to cast a new Scully since the actor who played Dana Scully has confirmed she won’t be returning to the show.
Fans ‘The X-Files’ were in for a thrilling ride in season 11 of the show, which ended with multiple possibilities for a potential season 12. One possibility is, however, not on the cards: the return of Dana Scully.

Gillian Anderson, the actor who plays Scully on the show, has confirmed on multiple occasions that she won’t be returning to the show again.
The supernatural sci-fi show ‘The X-Files’ became an almost instant success when it first released in 1993. Following the detective duo Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), as they investigated paranormal happenings, the show ended in 2003 after a good ten-year success.
Then in 2016, following a renewed interest in the show, it was called for a revival, and the ten-episode long season 10 was such a smashing success that it was called for yet another season, which came out in 2018.
‘The X-Files’ revival: Will Dana Scully return?
Even though the Fox network has said that it doesn’t have any plans yet to revive the show again, it hasn’t put a stop on speculation (or potential) for another season. But does Anderson’s exit mean that ‘The X-Files’ Season 12 storyline will need a new Scully to work with?
The show has previously worked with one half of the Mulder and Scully duo being absent for the most part. Duchovny, who played Mulder, was hardly present in seasons 8 and 9, and the audience did not find that appealing.
However, series creator Chris Carter has said that the show could continue without having Anderson play Scully. Although the show revolved around Mulder and Scully who as a team played a central role in defining the show itself, Carter says, “I think that certainly ‘The X-Files’ has more life in it, there are more stories to tell, with Gillian or without”.
‘The X Files’ Season 12: What happens next
In the finale of season 11, Mulder and Scully strive to find their son William before the villain, the cigarette smoking man, is successful in carrying out his masterplan. As the episode unfolds, it is revealed that William isn’t really Mulder’s son, but that the cigarette smoking man had artificially inseminated Scully in a lab.
William knows that the cigarette smoking man is actually his father. He morphs into Mulder and challenges the cigarette smoking man to shoot him, which he does, thinking that William is Mulder. Towards the last few seconds, Mulder gets to know that Scully is pregnant – and it’s his child this time. It is also revealed in the credits sequence that William somehow survives.
So ‘The X-Files’ Season 12 could take forward the story of Mulder and Scully’s actual child, but it must do so without somehow having Scully around. There is also William’s survival to explore, and whether the cigarette smoking man has really been thwarted.
Perhaps a new cast member could replace Dana Scully? Could Mulder be paired with a new partner to take the storyline forward? The plot of the show is rife with many possibilities! Do let us know how you think the show could proceed.
