Netflix may have embraced the fantasy genre with The Witcher but they don’t seem too keen on Henry Cavill, who plays Geralt of Rivia. Is the show is letting the actor go?
Henry Cavill has transformed himself many times for his roles, be it in Superman, fighting Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible, or hunting monsters as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher.
- Henry Cavill is not returning to The Witcher
- Season 2 is less confusing
- Ciri is the only protagonist in season 2
After venturing into the fantasy genre for quite a bit, there are reports that he is not returning for a second season. Is there any truth to these rumours?
Henry Cavill is not returning
After the climactic end to the first season of the show, Netflix is looking to plan the second instalment. It hasn’t been easy aligning themselves with the time that the global pandemic has granted them, while film and TV productions suffer all over the world.
As Netflix draws out a new plan for the second season, it also means that the show is branching away from some of the original cast members and adding a slew of characters in it. The biggest shock for fans will be if Geralt of Rivia does not make it to the next season.
But there are reports that instead of eliminating the character completely, we might witness a new monster-slayer in town, one that is not Henry Cavill.
Season 2 is less confusing
The Witcher is based on a series of books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and was adapted for TV by Lauren S. Hissrich. In Season 1, the show divides its time between three characters.
Season one saw Anya Chalotra playing a sorceress called Yeneffer, Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia and Freya Allan playing Ciri, a princess with an important destiny. These characters are destined to cross each other’s path and help each other in some way or the other.
While all three characters are connected in some way or the other, Geralt of Rivia and Ciri were bound by an oath made years ago. Ciri, as the show suggests, was born to do something great, and finding Geralt is her only way of achieving that.
Season 2 is all about Ciri
The finale of season one ended with Geralt finally finding Ciri while the audience waited with bated breath for an entire season. But now that the long-awaited reconciliation of Geralt and Ciri has happened, it is time for Geralt to move on.
In the next season, Ciri will likely go to Kaer Morhen to train to be a witcher. In the books, Yeneffer and Ciri both develop a close relationship; so hopefully, we’ll get to see the two interact in the second season.
However, The Witcher will not return till 2021. Creator Laura S. Hessrich tweeted that it will resume shooting soon after the break.
Well, the ultimate escapism we need from the real world is almost a year away but till then the hopes of seeing The Witcher ultimately shall keep us going. With or without Henry Cavill.
