Amazon Prime brought Good Omens to viewers in 2019 as a part of a six-episode series with a stellar lead and supporting cast. With Season 1 of the show cooking up a storm in terms of popularity, when can we expect a second instalment?
Good Omens garnered great reviews from critics as well as fans and quite rightly so. The show was created with a perfect balance of humour and the intense thrill of watching the world being saved from doomsday.
- A dream team saves the world
- What does Neil Gaiman have to say?
- Possible reboot updates
The six-episode series checked every box when it comes to a great fantasy thriller, and we have been waiting patiently for news of a second season.
Angels and demons team up to save the world
Good Omens has been adapted from the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The story of follows an angel, Aziraphale, played by Michael Sheen, and a demon, Crowley, played by David Tennant.
Both Crowley and Aziraphale have been lifelong friends and have spent a long time on earth, so long that they are quite accustomed and comfortable with their earthy life. In a twist of events, it is revealed that for 11 years, they have been protecting the wrong kid from turning into the Antichrist.
As fate would have it, Aziraphale and Crowley team up to save the world from the apocalypse by finding the right kid in only a few days’ time and by reasoning him back to his senses.
Though season 1 provided some amount of closure to the audience, the fans are heavily rooting for a season 2 release as we are not done with watching the quirky angel-devil duo working their powers to save the world.
What does Neil Gaiman have to Say?
Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s novel released in 1990 and though Amazon picked up the series 29 years late, Neil Gaiman is very much a part of the project. Gaiman is one of the executive producers of Good Omens and has given various inputs into the series adaptation of his co-written book.
In an interview to the press of which Digital Spy was a part, Gaiman said, “I took some liberties in the end because I didn’t want people who read the book being too cocky. So, there is stuff that keeps ticking and will keep worrying them and a plot that does not untangle until the final second, and that was fun to build.”
The fantasy thriller had stirred up the audience with what can be assumed as a buddy comedy, but nothing like its previous kinds. Season 1 of Good Omens was limited to only six episodes and it would be a good omen for the fans to get a season 2 release of the show.
Is there good news for Good Omens?
There might be a desperate demand for a Season 2 release of Good Omens, but as of now, it’s a far-fetched possibility. The creators of the show, including Gaiman, have been clear about not planning for a follow up right from the beginning and yet, our disappointed hearts prefer to brood in denial.
Last year, Gaiman spoke to a panel at SXSW, “The lovely thing about Good Omens is it has a beginning, it has a middle, and it has an end. Season 1 of Good Omens is Good Omens. It’s brilliant. It finishes. You have six episodes and we’re done.
We won’t try to build in all these things to try to let it continue indefinitely.” That being said, Gaiman is not entirely against a sequel as he said to Digital Spy, “If people love this enough, and if the time and the will is there, we could absolutely go back and do a lot more.”
It is hard to believe that there might not be a new adventure for our beloved angel-demon pair, but you can keep yourself busy with other equally riveting fantasy thrillers of Gaiman. Would you like Good Omens to come back with a season 2? Let us know in the comments below!
