Many moons ago, Sam and Dean were supposed to meet Stefan and Damon in a crossover episode of TVD and ‘Supernatural’. Here is a glimpse into what could have been but never was. Hold on tight to your seats!
Few television shows have witnessed the monumental success that CW’s ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘Supernatural’ have. TVD is a supernatural teen drama series based on L. J. Smith’s popular book series of the same name. The series was helmed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec and had a respectable eight-season run. The Vampire Diaries was set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, which was inhabited by supernatural beings like witches, vampires, and werewolves. It follows vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, both of whom have fallen in love with the same human. The show is brimming with drama, teenage angst, and romance, and quite a good-looking cast.

‘Supernatural’, on the other hand, builds a bigger universe through 15 seasons and follows the Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean. They’re an uber-cool duo, dedicated to saving the world by killing one demon at a time. Unlike the Salvatore’s, they’re not vying for a woman’s love, but instead, want to make the world a better place.
Both shows, regardless of how distinct they are from each other, have innate similarities. Maybe that’s why the writers at The CW proposed the idea of a ‘Supernatural’ crossover episode with ‘The Vampire Diaries’! Sadly, the plan didn’t go through because certain team members didn’t agree with the premise. Keep reading to learn about the TVD and ‘Supernatural’ crossover idea, and how the shows are more alike than different.

The CW hoped for TVD and ‘Supernatural’ to have a crossover episode
TVD and ‘Supernatural’ are two of the network’s most popular shows, so we’re not surprised that a crossover was proposed! In 2018, at a Q&A session for The CW, TVD showrunner Julie Plec revealed that a crossover was suggested. According to what Plec had to say, it seemed as if the network was thrilled about the collaboration.
As reported by “KSite TV”, Plec said,
“In season 1 or 2 of Vampire Diaries, they (The CW) approached us about maybe doing some kind of ‘Supernatural’ crossover. Kevin (Williamson) and I were like, ‘Absolutely not, because we are vampires and werewolves. We don’t have demons. We don’t have Hell. We don’t have the Devil. We don’t have any of that stuff! It’s like two completely different supernatural universes!’” Plec continued, “But now looking back with some distance, that would have been fun!”
We have to agree that both shows feature their own version of supernatural lore, and have a distinct storyline. The brotherly bond, however, is a theme that coincides, and considering how ‘Supernatural’ fit itself into a ‘Scooby-Doo’ crossover, TVD seems like a piece of cake.

The ‘Supernatural’ team loves crossover episodes
In 2018, the writers at ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Scooby-Doo’ came together for what resulted in an epic crossover episode. The writers had been discussing this collaboration for years, a dream that was possible because Warner Bros owns rights to both shows.
There was a natural fit between the two, and the episode went on to become one of the show’s highest-rated. Two-dimensional cartoon versions of Dean (Jensen Ackles), Sam (Jared Padalecki), and Castiel (Misha Collins) were created to fit the ‘Scooby-Doo’ visual style. The episode found a place in the show’s thirteenth season and was titled “Scoobynatural”. If the network could transport Sam and Dean to the animated world of Scooby-Doo, we can’t stop wondering about what the crossover with TVD would’ve been like.
Theories about the TVD and ‘Supernatural’ crossover that never happened
If you’re a loyal fan of TVD and ‘Supernatural’, there are similarities between the two that you couldn’t have missed. They’re both global sensations in the supernatural, horror-fantasy genre, and witnessed a respectable run. While TVD season 8 premiered a few years ago and wrapped up the story of Mystic Falls, ‘Supernatural’ Season 15 is on its way.
The Salvatore and Winchester brothers are more similar than they are different. They’ve known the loss of parents and led a life where the younger brother lived in the shadow of the older one. They’re both trying to protect those around them; for the Salvatore’s, it’s Elena, and for the Winchesters, well, the world. Stefan and Damon don’t always see eye to eye, but like the Winchesters, they learn to put each other first. It would’ve been interesting to see how the characters got around each other. And whether Damon would continue to be his sarcastic, snarky self, and Sam, the comical one who’d make us laugh.
They could’ve teamed up against an original vampire like Klaus, or battled a dangerous demon about to wreak havoc in their town. And maybe, just maybe, we’d get to see them riding off into the sunset, in the Chevy Impala.
We’re sorry if we got you reeling about this. But here’s a surprise! Click here to see a fan’s epic version of TVD and ‘Supernatural’ crossover! And let us know what you think about it.
