“The White Wolf” is what they call Geralt. But have you ever wondered why Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) has white hair in ‘The Witcher’?
Henry Cavill is one of the most charming and handsome men in Hollywood. As a result, he has always received acting jobs that enhanced his persona and made him look even dapper in the character’s skin. Be it Superman in DCEU’s ‘Man of Steel’; August Walker in ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’; or Sherlock Holmes in Netflix’s latest ‘Enola Holmes’, Cavill has always been the hero in the frame. However, the most distinct treatment with his looks was done in Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’.
From the white dyed hair of Henry Cavill to his cat eyes, to his body language, ‘The Witcher’ took it all to the next level.
Even though Cavill’s look in ‘The Witcher’ polarized the fan base, yet no one could ignore his distinct presence. And the major credit goes to his white hair. But have you ever wondered why Geralt of Rivia hair was white in ‘The Witcher’? His age is not the answer.

Henry Cavill – The mystery of white hair in ‘The Witcher’
Among all the key characters in ‘The Witcher’, be it Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), Jaskier aka the Bard (Joey Batey), or others, it was the look of Geralt which stood out the most. In ‘The Witcher’ TV show, by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, and also in the books, by the writer Andrzej Sapkowski, Geralt is nicknamed “the White Wolf”. While several Witchers exist in the books and the show, it’s Geralt (Henry Cavill) who has that distinct white hair. But why?
What it takes to become a Witcher – and why Geralt is special?
As we know, Witchers are a special kind who possess magical powers. They are kind of immortal, are immune to diseases and ageing, and have distinct eyes, hairs (specific in the case of Henry Cavill), and pale skin.
Geralt’s (Henry Cavill) white hair in ‘The Witcher’ is the result of a superpower.
As figured out by Screen Rant from the books: “In order to become witchers, apprentices are subjected to intense alchemical processes, mutagenic compounds, and intense physical and magical training. One of these processes is the “Trial of the Grasses”, a very painful trial in which witcher apprentices are required to consume special alchemical ingredients that affect their physiology.”
It’s not hard to digest that most of the apprentices do not survive through all the tests. Thus, we already know why there are very few Witchers. However, Geralt was capable of more than those who were already special.
Geralt is a Super-Witcher – A man of steel.
You might not know, but Geralt is not your usual Witcher. Indeed, there’s nothing usual about the Witcher kind in general, they all possess powers and are made through the kind of mutations that makes them superhuman. Yet Geralt, played by Henry Cavill, is different than other Witchers for his powers, his looks, and his hair. Even in the books, Geralt of Rivia is one of his kind.
It’s known that while most of the wannabe Witchers do not survive through the “Trial of the Grasses” and other trials, Geralt showed superior abilities in surviving through the trials. Thus, he was subjected to more cruel trails that no Witcher ever faced.
This led to Geralt having more powers and abilities than other Witchers. However, this led to further loss of pigment, resulting in his hair turning white and his skin turning further pale.
Ciri’s and Vesemir’s white hair
Some of the curious fans noted that not only Geralt (Henry Cavill) have white hair in ‘The Witcher’ show and the books, but even Ciri, the crown princess of Cintra, has similar looking hair. In the books, another Witcher, Vesemir, has white hair. Thus, some of the fans took it to Reddit to find the answer if they had such hair for similar reasons as of Geralt.
Why no other Witcher has white hair like Geralt, in the show and the books?
However, as highlighted by a few fans, Ciri’s white hair is of the general case. As one of the fans wrote, “Ciri just has -ashen grey- hair since childhood. As I remember, Ciri’s mother had grey hair as well. So, must be just a family trait”.
And Vesemir is known to be one of the oldest Witcher. Thus, it is believed that his white hair is a result of his old age. This makes Geralt the only Witcher to have the white hair which comes with special powers.
