Just three weeks after the second season premiered on Netflix, the streamer announced that the third instalment is set to release next year.
But for many, this may not come across as a surprise after the comedy-drama made the streaming platform’s top-ten most popular series of 2019 both in the UK and US. The show emerged as a stellar hit for the streaming service, which previously claimed that the second season was on track to hit 40 million viewers in its first month.

Here’s everything from potential release dates, cast for ‘Sex Education 3’ to the plot of the upcoming season.
When will ‘Sex Education 3’ premiere?
While Netflix did not confirm a premiere date in their announcement, they said the new episodes will go into production this year. Both seasons one and two premiered in January 2019 and 2020 respectively, so initially, we would have expected the third season to arrive in January 2021.

But the coronavirus pandemic has stalled the productions of several shows and prevented others from getting started. This could mean that fans will now have to expect season three to arrive a lot later.
Even though Netflix is working with in-house and third-party producers to devise a plan that can help resume production safely; without a clear exit strategy from the UK government, there is no certainty about when cameras can start rolling again across the industry in the country.
Expected cast of ‘Sex Education’ Season 3; who could appear in the show?
Even though there’s no official word on which cast members are returning, we think it is safe to assume everyone who featured in Petrie’s video is set to return to their respective roles in the upcoming season of ‘Sex Education’.
In the said video, Petrie strolls past the portraits of the main characters. From start to finish, we see: Emma Mackey (Maeve Wiley), Asa Butterfield (Otis Milburn), Connor Swindells (Adam Groff), Ncuti Gatwa (Eric Effiong), Patricia Allison (Ola Nyman), Tanya Reynolds (Lily Iglehart), Aimee Lou Wood (Aimee Gibbs), Kedar Williams-Stirling (Jackson Machetti) and Gillian Anderson (Jean Milburn).
So, fans can expect these faces to return for season 3.

*Spoilers ahead*
In a recent interview, show’s creator Laurie Nunn hinted at what ideas she has for the future of the show. She said, “I think these characters. They’ve got legs. I think I could do some more with them if we’re given the chance”.
Fans found that the end of season two left a number of storylines in conflict or at cliffhangers. The show’s popular and potential couple Maeve and Otis spent most of season two revolving around each other before the final episode left their future uncertain.
In the second season before breaking things off with Ola, Otis called Maeve to confess his love for her in a voicemail. But, before she could hear it, the voicemail was deleted by Isaac—Maeve’s new neighbour.
On the other hand, viewers can expect Maeve to be dealing with the fallout from her decision to inform social services after finding out that her mother was using drugs again which left her worked up about the welfare of her half-sister.
Season 3 may also pick from the time when Eric and Adam coupled up after Eric chose him over Rahim. But Nunn suggested that the relationship might not necessarily mean happiness for Eric.
Nunn explained,
“I hope that there’ll definitely be some Team Adam people and Team Rahim people … I feel a little afraid for Eric with his choice”.
But looks like we will have to wait until next year before we could find out some answers and how things pan out for the characters. Until then, you can binge-watch the first two seasons of Sex Education on Netflix.
