The Sopranos’ has always been part of the league when discussing the greatest shows ever made. With a new movie on the way, is season 8 looking like a possibility?
In the time of social distancing and lockdown, the streaming apps of the world had the time of their lives with people locked up inside their homes. And, as is usual practice in internet business, a list of the most binged shows came out.
- ‘The Sopranos’ will live as long as we do
- ‘The Sopranos’ without Tony Soprano
- ‘The Sopranos’ changed television
‘The Sopranos’ tops this list of the most-watched show during this pandemic and to no one’s surprise. The show, which premiered in 1999, forever changed television and introduced the concept of ‘anti-hero’ that we love so much (Walter from ‘Breaking Bad’?).
And with rumours about a probable reboot doing the rounds, I think it is safe to say that people will be more than willing to watch it.
Here is everything we know about ‘The Sopranos’ official return on television.
‘The Sopranos’ will live as long as we do
HBO has been fueling reboot rumours that the show could return for a new season. Creator David Chase is revisiting the world of the classic drama in the prequel film ‘The Many Saints of Newark’, starring late James Gandolfini’s son Michael.
The film will see Michael playing a younger version of his father’s famous character, Tony Soprano. When the director was asked about the show rebooting with a full-fledged season, he replied, saying that is something always on the table.
‘The Sopranos’ was the first show to put HBO on the map, earning the network 21 Emmys and 5 Golden Globes. So, clearly, the pull to do a reboot will be present.
So, what will the movie be about, and will we ever get a full-fledged season?
‘The Sopranos’ without Tony Soprano
Well, for the time being, we already have some slice of the New Jersey infamous crime family coming back to our screens, without the Tony Soprano we know, in the form of a movie. The movie ‘The Many Saints of Newark’, a prequel to the crime-drama series, will be about young Tony.
The movie is set in 1967 and will feature Tony’s father, Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano, Tony’s mother, Livia Soprano, and Tony’s uncle, Junior Soprano aka “Uncle Junior”.
‘The Sopranos’ was always lamenting over the good old days, the days when they were overly racist and tough masculinity was the universal norm. The movie will likely explore the mafia gang trying to find a place in the US as Italians and explore how the men and women of the Sopranos family became as they did.
The movie is set to release in March 2021.
‘The Sopranos’ changed television
On January 10, 1999, a mobster from New Jersey walked into a therapist’s office and was declared as the first and greatest anti-hero of television. The show followed mafia boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) through regular sessions with a psychiatrist to whom he goes for help after experiencing panic attacks.
Throughout the 7 seasons, he deals with how his lifestyle choices – infidelity and violence – has been the reason behind his family being dysfunctional. But the mob business is dying, and we see a man who was once a hero beset by his own family, friends, and enemies.
So, with a new movie on the way and the show being just as popular as the year it first premiered, a reboot is not hard to imagine- now that young Tony is all figured out.
But Tony Soprano will always be James Gandolfini, first and foremost.
