The possibility of another film for the British period drama–Downton Abbey. Scroll down to know about it!
Time to pour some tea as the Crawley family isn’t going anywhere, Downton Abbey fans. After the immense success of 6 seasons and a 2019 film adaptation of the drama series, there have been talks of another sequel film to add to its empire.
Highlights:
- Downton Abbey film sequel under works
- Joanne Froggatt wants to star as Anna Bates again
- Is Maggie Smith’s character Violet Crawley dead?

As reported by the Republic World, actors such as Joanne Froggatt have hinted at it earlier and expressed her interest to star in the new movie as Anna Bates again, “I know there’s definitely the talk of a second movie, and it’s lovely ‘cause we wouldn’t even be able thinking about it if the first one hadn’t gone down well as it had. As long as we can keep the same level of standards and make it something that the fans want to watch, then why not.”
Last year, the producer of the show Gareth Neame had confirmed that a sequel is under works according to Town & Country magazine, and was reported to say in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that, “We’re working on what the story is, and when we might be able to make it. But it’s the same as the first time around: We have to try to get everyone back together again. And that was very challenging. As always, it will be difficult to get the entire ensemble cast back together; many, many schedules will need to align. The challenge will be, is everyone available at the same time? Can we make deals with them? That will be the challenge.”
Besides the various issues that the makers need to resolve to get a green signal for the sequel’s production, the creator of the show Julian Fellowes is also working on another series called The Gilded Age. So he’ll probably be dividing his time between the two. But of course, the pandemic has delayed all productions under further notice. So while we can confidently expect the film sequel to hit our screens, it won’t be anytime soon.

What can we expect from Downton Abbey film sequel
The Dowager Countess’s sharp and witty ways have been the life of the show. But if we’ll get to see Maggie Smith reprise her role as Violet Crawley is a major question, since the last film had ended with her telling Mary that she’s sick. So she might possibly be dead and it won’t be the same without her punch lines. Julian Fellowes gave a cryptic response on being asked about it to the Daily Express tabloid, “She’s not very well, but she’s not dead. There’s no indication she’s dying imminently. We just have to wait and see what happens. Of course, we also have to see whether Maggie wishes to survive her present situation or not.”
We can only hope for the best that she’ll be back to ruffle a few feathers. The previous movie had also ended with a blooming romance between Tom and Lucy, so perhaps another marriage is on the cards in the upcoming sequel.
Besides that, there hasn’t been much revealed on the sequel’s royal plot. But the cast has expressed a lot of excitement over uniting again for the spin so there might be a lot more tea to spill.
