Mike Ross, the lawyer with a heart, left the sets of ‘Suits’ ahead of season 8. What prompted his exit from the show? We are here to give you all the dirt. Keep reading to find out!
The USA Network legal drama ‘Suits’ ended after season 9. Fellow “suitors”, however, had a hard time getting used to the last two seasons of the show without one of the main men, Mike Ross. Mike Ross, played by actor Patrick J. Adams, finished his story on ‘Suits’ ahead of season 8. Although fans and Harvey Specter found it hard to adjust to a Mike-less world, nobody really knows the real reason behind his exit? Let’s find out, then!
How and when did Mike Ross decide upon leaving ‘Suits’ Season 8?
- Mike Ross leaves Pearson Specter Litt
- Patrick J. Adams was done telling Mike’s story
- Mike Ross back for one final game
Mike Ross leaves Pearson Specter Litt
A desperate Mike Ross once told Harvey Specter, “So you always said that if I’m in a knife fight and I’m losing, to pick up a gun. And Pearson Specter Litt is a goddamn gun”. The same Mike Ross bowed out from Specter Litt ahead of ‘Suits’ Season 8, and for the next two seasons, it was not just Harvey who missed his right-hand man. After completing seven years on the show, Mike departed from the USA Network legal drama hoping to fight pro-bono cases with his newly wedded wife Rachel Zane.
In the final episode of ‘Suits’ Season 7, Mike and Rachel not only said their vows but also their goodbyes. At the end of the ceremony, Mike revealed to Harvey his plans of moving and settling down in Seattle with Rachel. The couple had decided on starting their own law clinic to fight pro-bono cases defending class actions against the rich, big companies. The idea of Mike settling down in Seattle to fight pro-bono cases, perhaps, came from the pledge he made to himself during his trial. Mike promised himself that if he ever got to practice law again, he would devote his energy, time, and work to the unprivileged and under-represented people, and not the interests of the big corporate firms. With that, Mike Ross exited the show, and just like that the Harvey-Mike bromance ended.
Patrick J. Adams was done telling Mike’s story
The real reason why Mike Ross did not return in season 8 of ‘Suits’ is that Patrick J. Adams believed that there was nothing more left to be explored for the character. Mike’s fraudulent qualifications were found out and he did time in the jail as well. With Mike’s secret out, which was the biggest thrill of the show, there’s not really much left for the character to offer. Moreover, his romantic angle with Rachel Zane had also reached the finish line given Meghan Markle couldn’t continue because of her marriage to Prince Harry. Truth be told, no other character could have replaced Rachel with Mike given their amazing chemistry on the show. Keeping all these things in mind, Patrick J. Adams realised that the story of Mike Ross was complete before ‘Suits’ moved into season 8.
“As we were starting to talk about renegotiating contracts [for season eight and beyond], I took a moment. Everybody was going full steam ahead and I stopped and said, ‘We need to think about this because this is more of my time and more of my life — and what’s the story left to tell?’ … I had this voice in my head that said that we’ve told his story and if he hangs out longer, Mike is just going to be another lawyer on television”.
Mike Ross back for one final game
Mike Ross’ exit from ‘Suits’ in season 8 did contribute some damage to the show’s viewership rating. That is understandable because the show was founded on the story of Mike Ross and Harvey Specter. There is no ‘Suits’ without this kickass duo for ‘Suits’ is the Specter-Ross romance. However, no law made by man could have changed Patrick J. Adams’ mind about leaving the show for god.
However, ‘Suits’ boss Aaron Korsh managed to get Mike Ross back one last time on the show before dropping the curtains on the show’s run. ‘Suits’ series finale saw Mike Ross and Harvey Specter going head to head against each other in the court. Agree or not, but no other television finale could ever top that! It had drama, nostalgia, and, of course, happy-endings!
