‘The Sopranos’ boss teases a new season
It has been thirteen years since ‘The Sopranos’ rode away into the sunset after completing six seasons of thrill and drama. ‘The Sopranos’ premiered in 1999 and led Hollywood television straight into the times of “Prestige TV”. It can easily be called the ‘Godfather’ of its times.
‘The Sopranos’ followed the life of the mob leader Tony Soprano, and his struggles to strike a balance between his personal and professional life. Already blessed with a huge tribe of followers, the show was recently brought back from the dead for a rerun by HBO. Perfectly timed with the lockdown and quarantine period, people immediately took to the classic and binged their time away, consumed by the brilliance of the show.
HBO boss Casey Bloys hinted at being open to considerations for a new season of ‘The Sopranos’ given that the prequel is already underway. Michael Gandolfini, the son of James Gandolfini aka Tony Soprano, has joined the prequel team as the lead and could possibly be a part of the reboot. Not dismissing the possibility of a reboot with a hard no, Casey Bloys told “Deadline”,
“I keep saying ‘never say never’. There are no plans, there is no discussions about it, but (Michael) is a really good actor, we had him on ‘The Deuce’. There is nothing on the table at the moment but I will stay open”.
‘The Sopranos’ prequel is under works
A decade and more later, ‘The Sopranos’ has come back to life only to gather more followers for itself. The show’s popularity is reaching new heights every day and the amazing feedback has made way for a prequel movie. The prequel film is called ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ and was set for an early release in September 2020. However, the Covid-19 crisis got in the way and pushed the release of the prequel to March 12, 2021. The prequel has Michael Gandolfini, the son of James Gandolfini, playing his father’s famous role of Tony Soprano. The young actor seems to be more than ecstatic for the opportunity to carry forward his father’s legacy and to step “into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano”.
‘The Many Saints of Newark’ would provide a glimpse into the life of Tony Soprano as a young boy. The story would focus mainly on the Newark riots of the time the film is set in. ‘The Sopranos’ boss, David Chase, claims to have been inspired by the turbulent times of that era when organized crime was at its peak. He told “Deadline”,
“The movie will deal with the tensions between the blacks and whites at the time, and Tony Soprano will be part of this, but as a kid … I was just interested in the whole Newark riot thing. I started thinking about those events and organized crime, and I just got interested in mixing those two elements”.
The prequel film will more or less cover the times Tony used to glorify in the initial episodes of the original show.
“It is going to depict when it was good. The mafia was very polished at that time, how they dressed and what they did. Those traditions were followed more loosely in the series. These weren’t guys who wore tracksuits, back then”, Chase added.
Could ‘The Sopranos’ hype make way for a new season?
The success of ‘The Sopranos’ has taken a leap beyond its original runtime. Ever since HBO reintroduced the show into the platform, it has picked up new fans for itself. The existing fans are still loyal to the show, but what’s really surprising is that the rerun has raised the viewership ratings considerably. This could only mean that the viewers are enjoying the content thoroughly and would never want the good stuff to end. However, we will have to wait to see if that could push the creators into creating a new season for ‘The Sopranos’ after the prequel. Until then, you have the film to look forward to!
