With a mother-daughter relationship like no other, Amy Sherman-Palladino’s 2000 comedy-drama Gilmore Girls became one of the most popular family shows of the decade. It introduced its audiences to its quick-witted dialogue-infused style that often relied on pop-culture references. - Is Netflix coming back with a season 2 this November?
In 2006, it was one of the few shows that survived the cut and was picked up by The CW for a season 7, after The WB became defunct. However, the series did not last long on The CW and was abruptly cancelled in 2007. The series was renewed by Netflix in 2016 as Gilmore Girls : A Year in the Life. With four years between its last stints on screen, is Netflix gearing up for the release of a season 2 by the end of 2020?
Lorelai and Rory – Everyone’s favourite mother-daughter duo
Gilmore Girls was nothing short of a phenomenon. The series was set in the town of Stars Hollow and revolved around a young, single mother in her early 30s, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham), and her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel), who was born when she was 16. The show focused on the nature of the relationship between the two as they were more like friends than mother and daughter. It chronicled friendship, romance, education, and ambition through its seven seasons.
The series opened to positive reviews from both critics as well as the audience, who were impressed by the freshness of its script and were in love with the iconic mother-daughter duo. The show was cancelled unexpectedly in 2007, and lost its chance of having a fitting finale. When it arrived on Netflix in 2014, it was accepted by a whole new generation of viewers with open arms. Netflix soon realised that the series was still extremely popular and decided to revive it as a mini-series called Gilmore Girls : A Year in the Life.
A revival that left us with more questions than ever
The 2016 revival, Gilmore Girls : A Year in the Life, had just four episodes, but showcased quite a few events. It featured Lorelai finally getting married to her partner of over 10 years, Luke Danes. Rory was shown to be engaged in a brief affair with former boyfriend, Logan Huntzberger and her beloved ex-boyfriend Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia) also came back. The series ended on a dramatic cliff-hanger where Rory revealed to her mother that she was pregnant without divulging any detail about the father’s identity.
In a 2018 interview, on being asked if a season 2 was on the cards, Sherman-Palladino said,
“It’s still a possibility. Everyone has been very busy. Alexis [Bledel] clearly is very busy! It would have to be the right story, and the right moment. A lot went into getting it together the first time.”

In another interview she expressed,
“It’s not anything other than we need the right story, the right format, and the right timing. It’s nothing more than that, it’s not that we have it in our deal and Amazon will let us go do it. So it’s not about anything other than it was sort of kismet the first time. And I feel like it needs to be kismet if we do it again.”
It has been four years since season 1 ended and fans cannot wait for a season 2 to have their questions answered.
