Micheal Scott organizes a day of beach games
In the twenty-third episode of the third season of ‘The Office’, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) is on a quest to find the right person who can succeed him as Scranton’s branch manager. He does so because David invited him to an interview for a much bigger job at the corporate headquarters in New York City next week. Michael decides to hold a ‘Survivor’-like contest that will help him find his best replacement. He asks everyone to think of it as a day-off, except Pam. He directs her to take notes on each of the candidate’s skills and behaviours. No one can guess Michael’s true intentions behind these contests.

Michael first starts with an egg race. Seeing the contestants failing to stick to his plans, he tells Pam to prepare a hot dog eating contest. But when all of them start refusing to participate, Michael reveals his upcoming interview. Apart from Jim, the four tribe leaders participate in the contest. Michael then sets up a mock sumo wrestling in which Dwight emerges as the winner.
Pam walked on hot coals and confessed her feelings episode
The final event of the beach games episode is to walk across hot coals. Michael first tries to walk across the hot coals but never gets to it. Pam tries to take the challenge herself. But Michael stops her saying that she is not one of the candidates. He then asks Jim to walk across the coals. But he refuses because he does want to burn his feet. In an attempt to impress and blackmail Michael into giving him the position, Dwight attempts to walk on the coals. But collapses on top of them.
When everyone is talking in a group, Pam slips away and walks barefoot across the hot coals. Feeling the adrenaline rush, Pam decides to deliver a speech. She started by expressing how she successfully did the walk that even Michael could not do. So maybe she should be his boss now. Pam also expressed how disappointing it was that no one came to her art show. She invited all of them, and it really sucked that no one was there.
She further expressed to Jim that she called off her wedding because of him. But now they are not even friends. She felt how things are now just weird between them, and she misses him. In her speech, Pam also confessed that Jim was her best friend before he went to Stamford. She felt she should not have been with Roy and how there were a lot of other reasons to call her wedding. But Pam revealed that she did not care about any of those reasons until she met him.
In the end, she wrapped the speech up by saying it is fine that he is with someone else. Pam quickly realized how the coals were burning her feet up. So, she ended her speech and walked into the water to cool her feet off. While everyone sat in awkward silence, an impressed Michael repeated that he is looking for a replacement with sales experience.
Jenna Fischer talks about the Pam speech
Fischer also wanted to channel that burst of adrenaline that Pam felt after walking on the hot coals. So, she made sure that her speech sounded very impulsive. She further admitted that having a meaty piece of the dialogues gave her some insight into what Steve Carell did on the show.
