Pam and Jim’s relationship on ‘The Office’
During the beginning of the show, Jim was just an unfortunate salesman at Dunder Mifflin who fell in love with Pam, the receptionist. Much to the fan’s disappointment, it was only one-sided. At that time, Pam was engaged to Roy, who was one of the warehouse staff members. Even though they could not get into a relationship together, their on-screen chemistry was noticeable by everyone in seasons one and two.
Together, they would often prank their colleague Dwight Schute. At the end of season 2 of ‘The Office’, Jim told Pam that he loved her, but sadly she rejected him. In season 3, Jim was transferred to the Stamford, Connecticut branch. He later returned from Scranton with a new girlfriend, Karen, who was also a Dunder Mifflin employee.

By this season, Pam had left Roy. She then kept thinking about Jim. Pam got to pursue graphic designing and many other things for the first time. By the end of season 3, Jim broke up with Karen and asked Pam out on a date for the first time. From the beginning of the fourth season of ‘The Office’, Pam and Jim were finally in a relationship. They did long distance, went through a few rough patches. They also got married after they found out that Pam was pregnant. Pam and Jim’s relationship on ‘The Office’ became solid. They dealt with Pam’s parents’ break-up, and Michael dating Pam’s mom. In the later seasons, they outgrew Dunder Mifflin.
Pam started working in sales for the Michael Scott Paper Company, and Jim became a sports agent. Pam also got pregnant again. But this time, it was because Fischer was pregnant in real life. At the end of the series, Jim and Pam headed to Austin.
Jim and Pam were supposed to break up?
Even today, Jim and Pam’s relationship with ‘The Office’ is appreciated by fans all over the world. However, not many are aware that the show was planning to break off the relationship. According to People Magazine, Jim and Pam were supposed to split in season 9 of ‘The Office’. In the book ‘The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom’ of the 2000s, author Andy Greene revealed that the show’s creator Greg Daniels had envisioned a significantly different path for Jim and Pam.
Pam to ditch Jim for Brian?
According to “Collider”, writer Owen Ellickson talked about how in the book there were talks of Pam and Brian possibly hooking for a brief moment. The makers did show Brian comforting Pam after she had an argument with Jim. Brian also saved Pam from getting attacked in the parking lot. Hence, it was clear that Brian was developing feelings for Pam, but it did not go any further.
In the book, Ellickson said that he did not think it was actually about going there. They never did anything. It was just to introduce worry in the audience.
Thankfully, the writers did not go ahead with breaking up Pam and Jim.
“We had to pull the ripcord on it because it was so painful to the fans of the show. John Krasinski said to me, ‘Brent, this final season is for the ultra-fans of the show. They are the only ones really still left watching, right? This is for them. Jim and Pam splitting up are too painful for them to sustain all the way to the reunion. We have to get them back together immediately’. I was like, ‘Wow, we can’t allow this beautiful couple to really be like on the verge of divorce. It is too awful for them”
“Collider” reported.
