Doing justice to one of the greatest TV shows of all time might be a tall order for a prequel movie.
The upcoming movie ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ will act as a prequel for the early 2000s legendary mafia show ‘The Sopranos’. The show revolved around the life of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano’s life and those of his colleagues, family members, and enemies. The show garnered a lot of attention owing to its emotional and intellectual depth and has been the subject of critical analysis since it aired. The show ended after 6 seasons and ran from 1999 to 2007. Now, after more than 13 years, the show will be revived in the form of a prequel movie.
- What will ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ be about?
- How well does the movie connect with the original show?
- Will the movie be nearly as good as the show was?
The new movie was supposed to drop this September itself but the Covid lockdown pushed the filming dates further and further and it is now being reported that the film will be released sometime in March next year (2021). The movie will see many of the show’s characters being brought back on the screen as their younger selves in New Jersey of the 60s era.
What will ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ be about?
‘The Many Saints of Newark’ will capture the story of a young Tony Soprano living in Newark, New Jersey, during the late 60s. The story will take us to Tony’s late teenage years and give us a glimpse into how exactly he got involved in the Italian-American mafia. The movie will also revive Tony’s father Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano (played by Jon Bernthal) who served as the local mob boss before Tony and his uncle Junior took over (after Giovanni died).
Serving as the backdrop for the story will be the race riots that took place in Newark at that time between the Italian-Americans and African-Americans. The inciting incident of the ’67 riots bears an eerie similarity to the recent happenings in the United States that launched countrywide protests against police brutality.
How well does the movie connect with the original show?
The movie takes us quite a bit back in time but still manages to keep most of the lead characters of the show intact.
The movie ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ will be directed by David Chase (who created the original show) as well as Alan Taylor. Tony Soprano, the character that late actor James Gandolfini played, will be now played by his own son Michael Gandolfini in the movie. The movie might also shed some light on the root causes of Tony’s psychological trauma (something he blamed on his rough childhood in the series) and also the life of Dickie Moltisanti.
Dickie Moltisanti was the father of Christopher Moltisanti, Tony’s prodigy. Tony mentions him several times in the series, always with respect and gratitude.
Will the movie be nearly as good as the show was?
In its time, ‘The Sopranos’ was hailed as the best TV show ever created, it won numerous Emmys and Golden Globes, gained millions of fans all over the world. Even after more than a decade since the show’s conclusion, there’s not a lot of shows that can be considered its equal.
And so, it should not come as a surprise to ‘The Sopranos’ fans if the upcoming movie does not live up to its original series; it’s extremely possible and, in our opinion, more than likely to happen. It would not be the first time that a follow up movie of a great series turns out to be a dud, there’s a whole string of them: ‘El Camino’, ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’, etc. These flicks were great, however, when compared to the original series they were not nearly as good.
