‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ was a trendsetting teen drama of the 90s that is still loved and missed by fans. So, after the recent union of the cast, is a season 11 of the series on the cards?
‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ became a global pop-culture phenomenon during its 10-season long run between 1990 and 2000. It made teen idols out of its fresh-faced cast members and was the most-watched teen drama of the time. Despite receiving low ratings during the first season, the show picked up extensively and became one of the most influential shows of the 90s. The series finale attracted a viewership of over 25 million people despite the many changes in cast and story that had taken place over the seasons. The series was such a huge hit that it became a whole franchise churning out sequels and spin-offs including ‘Melrose Place’ (1992), ‘Models Inc.’ (1994), ‘90210’ (2008), and ‘Melrose Place’ (2009). In 2019, the original cast of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ came together for the much-awaited reunion called ‘BH90210’. So, can we now expect a revival of the 1990 series soon?

‘Beverly Hills, 90210’: The fantasy of every ‘90s teenager
Created by Darren Star, the series followed the lives of a bunch of high-school going friends residing in the elite and high-class locality of Beverly Hills, 90210, California in Los Angeles as they transitioned to adulthood. The initial emphasis of the show was on twins Brandon (Jason Priestley) and Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) as they tried to adjust to their new lives in the posh society with their parents. The show focused on the relationships and friendships of these teenagers and often dealt with relevant social issues such as homophobia, drug abuse, violence, teenage pregnancy, teenage suicide, eating disorders, racism, alcoholism, and AIDS.
Other important cast members included Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Luke Perry, Brian Austin Green, Douglas Emerson, Tori Spelling, Carol Potter, James Eckhouse, Joe E. Tata, Mark Damon Espinoza, Kathleen Robertson and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen.
The series found popularity and success internationally and was named the “Best School Shows of All Time” by AOL TV in 2008 and has been credited with creating or popularizing the teen soap genre that many other successful television shows followed in the years to come.
‘BH90210’: The 2019 reboot
‘BH90210′ premiered on Fox on August 7, 2019, and featured some of the original stars including Priestley, Doherty, Garth, Ziering, Carteris, Green, and Spelling as themselves in a heightened version of reality inspired by their real lives and relationships as they launched a reboot of the 1990 series. It received favourable reviews from both critics and audiences.
The comedy-drama was launched as an event series even though, according to Garth and Spelling, future seasons were very much possible. However, on November 7th, 2019, Fox announced that it had cancelled the series after one season. Michael Thorn, Fox’s president of entertainment explained, “To sustain something that meta and heightened in the long-term is incredibly hard. We always kind of envisioned it as an event … So we felt like to do it as a short-term event where you could just catch up with these actors that you love and do something that was wildly different was a great way to honour the legacy of the show”.
Possibility of a revival in the near future
In June 2020, Spelling hinted that a reunion celebrating the 30th anniversary of the show was in pre-production. On October 4th, the original cast reunited in a virtual reunion where they reminisced their time shooting for the teen drama. The cast laughed and shed tears as they spoke of the time as well as the loss of their fellow cast member Luke Perry.
The three and a half hour event was part of “The Beverly Hills, 90210 Show Videocast”, a series in which writers/producers Charles Rosin and Larry Mollin, and host Peter Ferriero, regularly discuss the show alongside visits from the cast, writers, and fans.
The series has already spun out reboots and reunions, and it is yet to be seen whether a season 11 would ever be a possibility. But considering the material its star cast and makers are releasing, we have to say that we are more than satisfied with all their efforts and looking forward to whatever they throw at us next.
