The news that Netflix’s record-breaking series ‘The Crown’ is coming to a close after the fifth season left viewers worldwide in shock. - The final goodbye: ‘The Crown’ Season 5
But, before we bid goodbye to a show which put Netflix on the map as a production house to be reckoned with, ‘The Crown’ still has two more seasons for its viewers to enjoy.
With so many historical narratives that British history has to offer, what is ‘The Crown’ Season 5 going to be about, and how is the hit period-drama series going to end?
‘The Crown’ Season 5: The new and old
On January 31st 2020, ‘The Crown’s’ creator, Peter Morgan, confirmed that the fifth season is going to be it for the Netflix series. And with that announcement came a new revelation for ‘The Crown’ fans: the new Queen of England had been discovered.
Going as per tradition, ‘The Crown’ features a new cast every two seasons. And season 5 of ‘The Crown’ will see Imelda Staunton playing Queen Elizabeth II after succeeding the likes of Claire Foy and Olivia Colman who played the lead role from season one to season four.
Staunton, most famous for playing Dolores Umbridge in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, is an Academy Award nominee and a very well-known name in British cinema. Staunton further commented saying that she is beyond excited and honoured to be playing the Queen.
If an elder Queen comes in place of Olivia Colman, who currently plays the role of Queen Elizabeth II, how much farther is the period-drama going to go?
People’s Princess: Diana and her legacy
The most awaited era of British royalty is perhaps the era where Lady Diana is introduced in the Royal family. Season 4 of ‘The Crown’ will see newcomer Emma Corrin play the role of Lady Diana who, at the time, was Princess of Wales, Diana.
Season 4 of ‘The Crown’ will feature Diana’s tumultuous marriage to Prince Charles and the toll their public divorce left not only on Queen Elizabeth but the entire British royal family. The show will focus on Princess Diana as she goes from being an anonymous teenager to becoming one of the most iconic women in the world, alongside infant versions of Prince Harry and Prince William.
So, where will ‘The Crown’ take its final bow? And at what point will season 5 of ‘The Crown’ bid a teary-eyed goodbye to its audience?
The final goodbye: ‘The Crown’ Season 5
The final season begs a very important question: Where do we stop?
The 1990s were a terrible decade for the British monarchy. The Queen’s all three children got divorced, a fire broke out in Windsor castle which led to the Queen opening the gates of Buckingham Palace to the public to restore the palace.
And in 1997, a tragic event shook the world. Princess Diana died in a car-accident and millions of mourners took to the streets of England to express their grief, while many blamed the British royal family for the tragic incident.
It has been reported that season 5 of ‘The Crown’ will end with the death of Lady Diana, which forever changed how the public viewed the royal family and made them admissible to critique and hate from people who blamed them for the death of their princess.
A Queen that was loved by millions was not only under heavy critique by the media and citizens of her country, but the death of Princess Diana also left a glaring mark on the British royal family. A mark that not only shook the royal family to its very core but left them shaken and never the same.
Well, 2022 isn’t too far away, which is when ‘The Crown’ Season 5 will most likely premiere.
