Sutter’s journey with ‘Sons of Anarchy’ has been a long and rocky ride
Kurt Sutter had been sitting on his throne ruling the world of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ for quite a long time before things went south between him and Fox Networks in the latter part of last year. Fox dropped Sutter from running the show’s prequel ‘Mayans M.C’ on behavioural grounds. A recent Twitter post by Sutter, however, brought to light his plan for a sequel and a prequel of ‘Sons of Anarchy’.

For as long as we have known, Sutter has been associated with the success and popularity of ‘Sons of Anarchy’. However, the recent turn of events has not only been disappointing for the fans but Sutter as well. He told “Deadline”, “Creatively and emotionally, I was burned out”. He further added, “Bottom line, I created the circumstances that led to my being forced out … I feel the way they expedited and qualified the move was unfair, but the truth is, it was not a good fit and I had to go”.
Sutter shed some light on what really tarnished his relationship with Fox. He said, “It all started with a joke. And not a very good one. There was a line in the season 2 premiere … Coco sees EZ’s distracted and says: ‘Lighten up Boy Scout’, and gesturing to the playground, says, ‘We’re going to Disneyland’. EZ replies: ‘Yeah? Guess this is where Walt buried all the Jews he had killed’. Coco comments: ‘That’s dark man’ … And exits. Although the joke came out of character and, in any other environment, would have been typical of my brand of dark humour, I’m not an idiot. I knew it would ring some bells”.

Sutter recently posted about spin-off ideas for ‘Sons of Anarchy’
Although Sutter is no longer associated with ‘Mayans M.C’, he does have some pretty strong plotline ideas about the sequel to ‘Sons of Anarchy’. A recent Twitter post by Sutter cooked up a storm when he talked about having a sequel in mind for the show.
He wrote, “I had this revelation between ‘Sons of Anarchy’ and ‘Mayans’ — that the SoA mythology would be 4 shows: ‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘Mayans MC’, ‘First Nine’ and ‘Sam Crow’. ‘First Nine’ would be a limited series. Nine episodes. It would end before we began to tread on the history we created in Son. ‘Sam Crow’ would be the fate of Wendi, Nero, Abel, and Thomas”.
Apparently, according to Sutter, the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ sequel should focus around Jax’s sons. Honestly, it’s not the worst of ideas since fans are pretty inclined on finding out how Abel’s life turned out ever since he slipped on the “Sons” ring.
Evolving the two reboot ideas for ‘Sons of Anarchy’
When Sutter teased fans with his idea of a sequel for ‘Sons of Anarchy’, he also hinted at the show having two spin-offs. One would deal with the gang’s history, and the other would focus on the future. So, according to his plan, there would be a prequel and a sequel. The idea has been on Sutter’s mind for quite a few years now. A few years ago, Sutter opened up to Tom Arnold about the same. He said, “I have a sense of ‘Sons’ being four chapters”.
In his own words, his “dream quartet” would have a prequel that “would begin in Vietnam with John Teller and Piney Winston, and it would be about them coming back to America. His idea of the sequel, on the other hand, is “a series of events that takes us down the line into the future that perhaps sets up some kind of dynamic for Jax’s sons to become aware of who his dad was and things like that”.
Either way, there is no clarity whether Sutter’s ideas will materialize because of his “current situation with Fox”.
