Having earned CBS peak ratings even in its tail-end seasons, yet another season of breakout sitcom ‘The Big Bang Theory’ could change the fortunes of the network.
Fans are being very vocal about ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Season 13. And if CBS really considers it, the season could mint the network a whole lot of green.
Highlights
- The business side of things
- Could a spin-off work?
Following the end of the 12th season, the cast and creators of hit sitcom ‘The Big Bang Theory’ bid a tearful farewell to its audience. But, fans are not ready to let go so soon, they want more of the show and have been clamouring for ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Season 13!
The show is mainly about awkward but brilliant scientists, Leonard and Sheldon, and their friends who meet and befriend Penny, their extroverted and pretty new neighbour who wants to become an actress.
As a TV series about a gangly group of awkward scientists who are smart at things like physics but don’t know what to do when faced with social situations, ‘The Big Bang Theory’ presented comedy that was rooted in nerdy things. It resonated with the viewers particularly because it seemed to lightly make fun of the nerd culture and fandom, but in a way that also sort of celebrated it.
If ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Season 13 were to materialise, not only would there be a lot to explore in how the main characters take their lives ahead after the events of season 12, but there would also be a lot of money to make for CBS.
The business side of things
With its 279 episodes, the series made history as the longest-running multi-camera show. This itself says a lot. The show also performed consistently well according to the ratings, even at the tail-end seasons. For CBS, its end will mean that the primetime spot for 2019-2020 for the network remains empty.

Moreover, CBS will also not be able to air old episodes of ‘The Big Bang Theory’. It will have to send the rights elsewhere for syndication, and it is going to be a while before the network will be allowed to air the show again.

Another season, then, could buy time for the network and help build upon a proper replacement for it.
But, maybe there’s yet another way: a spin-off.
Could a spin-off work?
Could a spin-off work in the case of ‘The Big Bang Theory’? It depends. But if you look at other popular shows, spin-offs have famously performed horribly. (Does anyone even remember the disaster that ‘Joey’, the spin-off of ‘Friends’, was?) Plus, who could the spin-off focus on? Leonard and Penny as the central characters, with a new set of characters for supporting roles? Or, Sheldon and Amy as they navigate life together?
There is also the idea of a prequel, but that is already in existence in the form of ‘Young Sheldon’. And, without adult Sheldon around, you don’t really get the feel of the original show!
A season 13 could really work magic for CBS in terms of business and money-making. Not to mention, it would be a wish come true for so many fans of the show all around the world!
