Here are 5 moments between Sheldon and Penny on ‘The Big Bang Theory’ that will prove that they are soulmates, and will surely make Amy jealous!
Someone has rightly said that friendship is a slow ripening fruit. It was exactly how Sheldon and Penny grew from becoming frenemies to becoming soulmates. We wondered if one day the writers of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ will make the two polar opposites fall for each other romantically. Fans were actually rooting for Sheldon and Penny before Amy was introduced.
Top five moments that prove Sheldon and Penny were soulmates
Todd WanDerVerff, TV critic of The A.V. Club commented,
“[‘The Big Bang Theory’] made such an inspired, odd coupling that, at times, it seemed as though the entire show was about them” and their chemistry “has some of the rattle and rhythms of the great comedic duos”.
Though there were many notable moments where we saw the mismatched pair – a scientist and a waitress – bond like a house on fire; five such moments are, according to us, truly special.
1) When “Soft Kitty” played for the first time on ‘The Big Bang Theory’
The scene goes back to the first season in the episode titled “The Pancake Batter Anomaly” where Penny played a nursemaid to Sheldon. It was for the first time we saw how an issue as simple as cold can make Sheldon so vulnerable.
All his friends had no patience for his tantrums except for Penny. She took the charge of a nurse to Dr Sheldon Cooper.
Sheldon asks her to sing his favourite childhood song “Soft Kitty”. Sheldon only allowed Penny to sing his sacred song which his grandmom sang for him. Penny was a little surprised when he asked her to sing it for the first time in this episode but lovingly obliged, proving that she’ll always be with him, even when he is difficult to tackle.
2) Sheldon took care of Penny when Leonard was away
Leonard had to leave Penny alone to go for research in season 7. This became the perfect time for Penny and Sheldon to bond with each other.
To our surprise, Sheldon takes his unofficial duty seriously. He goes to great lengths to make sure he understands Penny and comforts her in her boyfriend’s absence. Sheldon flashes his true emotional side to Penny for the first time.
He offers her hot beverage in the middle of their argument, and they end up hugging each other in a more meaningful way.
3) When Penny comforted Sheldon on his birthday panic moment
The episode titled “The Celebration Experimentation” marked the 200th episode for ‘The Big Bang Theory’. To celebrate the milestone, the writers celebrated the birthday of Sheldon in that episode.
Sheldon is so overwhelmed with the birthday party that he almost gets an anxiety attack. He isolates himself in the bathroom. But Penny follows him to the bathroom as well. It is only Penny who can tackle Sheldon in such situations.
Penny confesses to Sheldon that befriending him has made her a better person. He admits that he was now more comfortable hugging her.
4) Only Sheldon believed in Penny’s dream
Penny was a regular girl from Nebraska with big dreams in her eyes. She moved to California at a young age to fulfil her big Hollywood dream. Her own family and her boyfriend made fun of her when she discussed her ambition.
It was only Sheldon who truly believed that she has a hidden acting bone in her. In the episode titled “The Monster Isolation”, Penny gets the lead role of Blanche DuBois in a production of “A Streetcar Named Desire”. Sheldon was truly impressed by her performance and could not believe his eyes. He was awestruck and later commented that she was remarkable.
5) Sheldon’s surprise reaction on Penny’s Christmas gift
There was a time when touching another person was a big deal for Sheldon. Thanks to Amy Farrah Fowler, he ended the series as a married man.
But before Amy entered his life, Penny’s Christmas gift compelled him to break the shackles of shyness or awkwardness and hug Penny. In the episode titled “The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis”, Penny surprises Sheldon with a napkin signed by the legendary actor Leonard Nimoy, Mr Spock himself.
Sheldon is so delighted in the moment and does what he has never done before – he hugs Penny, to which Leonard aptly comments “a Saturnalia miracle”.
