In Marvel comics, Dark Phoenix tops the list of villains that have the ability to leave Captain Marvel virtually powerless.
Both, Sophie Turner and Brie Larson featured in a stand-alone female superhero movie with Dark Phoenix and Captain Marvel respectively. But at that time, Marvel and Fox were two different entities. After the Disney Fox merger, Dark Phoenix movie took a toll and ended up being a box office failure. But an on-screen merger with her rival, Captain Marvel, Dark Phoenix might be able to retain her image along with the actress who plays the role, Sophie Turner.

Dark Phoenix vs Captain Marvel— The box office fight
The movie that turned Jean Grey dark did not turn out to be as big a hit as it was expected to be. Various reasons were quoted by tabloids trying to find reason in the failure. But the reason for Sophie Turner’s Dark Phoenix was clear— Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel that followed Disney and Fox’s deal.
Initially, the Dark Phoenix release date was scheduled for November 2018 or February 2019. But thanks to the Disney-Fox deal, the movie was shifted to July, which was conveniently after Captain Marvel’s release date. Moreover, Kevin Feige has been very clear about how he wanted Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel to be the first female superhero movie in MCU.
“She’s one of the most popular characters in our comics, she’s one of the most powerful characters in the comics and will be the most powerful character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Kevin Feige’s words make it clear.
“And one of the highlights at my career at Marvel was introducing her at Comic-Con and having her coming out on stage and stand there with literally almost everything else from our universe, and there she was at the forefront, and it was a great foreshadowing of not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe.“
Not only this, it has been claimed that both the characters have similar cinematic appearances and storylines. Had Dark Phoenix released earlier than Captain Marvel in 2019, the history would have been very different.
Sophie Turner could be the first mutant in MCU with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel 2
Despite Dark Phoenix’s failure at the box office, it cannot be denied that the character (and Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner) bring in a lot of potential to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Moreover, it is rumoured that Captain Marvel 2 will introduce the first X-Man into MCU. If that is the case, Dark Phoenix will prove to be a perfect choice.
On one hand, Sophie Turner needs a second chance to prove that she is the perfect Dark Phoenix, and on the other hand, she and Brie Larson would be the perfect branding faces for Captain Marvel 2’s success. Irrespective of the fact that she is the first mutant in MCU or not, it would be a huge investment if Captain Marvel 2 brings in Sophie Turner as a villain.
