Will the ‘Sex and the City’ reboot work without this main character? Here’s what the people think
Some television series revolutionise pop-culture like no other. One such series is ‘Sex and the City’. The iconic series made us familiar with cosmopolitans, Manolo Blahniks, and the term “cougar”. The show had aired for a total of 6 seasons between 1998 and 2004. The show did return for two movie adaptations but that wasn’t enough for the fans. ‘Sex and the City’ is now returning with a reboot but it is not exactly what fans were hoping for, because there is a missing cast member in the trailer.

HBO Max has confirmed the spin-off of the series, and the three remaining cast members of the series shared the trailer of the same. On December 22, the channel confirmed that a 10-episode limited series is in progress. The show, as per the trailers shared on Instagram by the present cast comprising of Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes), and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York.), will now focus on the complicated realities of life and friendship in their 50s.
The reboot also has a new name ‘And Just Like That’. Fans were surprised to see that Kim Cattrall AKA Samantha was not tagged in the trailer. On being questioned by fans, Sarah Jessica Parker revealed that Samantha would indeed not be a part of this new series.
Why is Samantha not a part of it?
Although Samantha’s absence from the new series and the trailer is not what fans wanted, yet, it was no surprise. The public feuds between Kim Cattrall and the rest of the cast members were nothing new. Even earlier, when there were rumours of a reboot in 2019, Kim Catrall had told “The Daily Mail”, that she had no plans to reprise her role as Samantha ever!
Kim has had numerous public spats with Sarah Jessica, the protagonist of the show. Sarrah, who is also the show’s executive producer, did not get along well with Kim who stole the limelight of the show from her. The show that focused on the friendship of the four friends was non-cordial behind the scenes. Clifford Streit, the inspiration for Carrie’s best male friend Stanford Blatch, in an interview in 2008 explained that the resentment between Sarah and Kim began as Kim stole the show.

The portrayal of Samantha by Kim was effortless and the cameras always turned to her. To complicate things further, Kim asked to be paid £720,000 an episode, up from a reported £253,000. Sarrah, who was the decision-making executive producer, did not take it well. She had admitted to the same tensions by saying that a 90 hr/week schedule can make people exhausted.
Kim has been vocal about her feeling concerning the other cast members especially, Sarah. Another such incident took place in 2016 when Sarrah expressed grief for Kim’s father’s demise. To this, Sarah’s onscreen best friend Kim replied, “My Mom asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?” She also bashed Sarrah’s fake persona of “a nice girl”.
Contrary to how Kim Cattrall a.k.a Samantha handled the situation with sheer brutality, Sarrah has never accepted that they fought. She has claimed that she never responded to any of it. Sarrah is not the only co-star that Kim had differences with. Kristan, who played Charlotte York, also reported that although she saw both Cynthia and Sarrah regularly, she did not see Kim much. The two once refused to eat together at a hotel after the shooting.
Will the show be able to thrive without her?
Without a doubt, Kim had great timing on-screen, and Samantha was a diva for most. The unhappiness about missing Samantha could be seen clearly in the trailer. Kim has also received backlash for refusing to play Samantha anymore.
Jimmy Fallon joked about the situation by comparing it to avengers without Thor’s hammer. He also made fun of how irrelevant the plot would be without her. On ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’, the host said that without Samantha it should just be called “The City”. In all, the show which previously won seven Emmys and eight Golden Globes may not be able to attract the same response sans our beloved Samantha!
