The old on-court rivals faced each other in a heated match at the US Open
Serena Williams faced an old competition at the US Open. On Monday, Williams crushed Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-1 in the first round at the grand slam. The 37-year-old is aiming at her 24th grand slam title. And after her performance at the court yesterday, fans have faith that she will get the trophy home.
When two great players face each other, history is sure to be made
Serena Williams faced her competition at the US Open. But this was after her infamous row with the chair umpire that overshadowed her loss in 2018 final. Moreover, there were no signs of back spasms that made her retire from the Toronto final two weeks ago.
In fact, Serena Williams showed some of her best moves on the court since her maternity leave in 2018. What was unique about this match was that this marked the first time the pair met on court before round 16.
But the result was not something new for the fans. Maria Sharapova has had a one-sided story as Serena William competition all throughout her career. So much so, that Williams is in the lead by a whopping difference of 20-2. Moreover, Sharapova’s last victory was in 2004.
If we do not include 2018 French Open (when Serena withdrew due to injury) that would mean that Serena William has an 18-match winning streak against her competition.
Maria Sharapova, on the other hand, has fallen to the 87th rank all thanks to her injury-hit 2019 season. This even included a shoulder surgery that took place in February.
Now that Serena Williams is headed closer to the grand slam, she will be facing American wildcard, Catherine McNally next. On Monday, McNally beat Timea Bacsinszky 6-4 6-1 to move forward. Who do you think will win the next match? Share your views in the comments section below
