‘The Vampire Diaries’ reboot: Fans say yay or nay?
‘The Vampire Diaries’ became an instant hit, with its pilot, attracting the highest viewership for The CW since its launch in 2006. Set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, the series follows the journey of feuding vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, as they try to pursue love and save the townspeople from evil supernatural forces.
With 171 episodes across 8 seasons, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ became the longest-running vampire show on television. The sparkling love-hate chemistry between Ian Somerhalder as Damon, Paul Wesley as Stefan, and Nina Dobrev as Elena made the actors heartthrobs of the world.
Stefan’s heroic sacrifice to save Mystic Falls in the series finale is still held in high regards by fans. Recently, a video of a teenage girl crying her lungs out over Stefan’s death went viral on Twitter. The video also prompted actor Paul Wesley to respond.

The finale was highly praised for how it honoured the show’s long legacy, but that just left fans wanting a reboot all the more. Who would say no to anything that includes more of the Salvatore brothers?
An excited fan also wrote on Reddit, “I heard that it might happen because so many people have been streaming the series on Netflix. They are also rebooting ‘Buffy’ with an African-American in the role of the slayer. There are a lot of shows being pitched for a redo, and ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is one of them”.
Fans desperately want these characters back
Since rumours about ‘The Vampire Diaries’ reboot started doing the rounds, the most pertinent question among the fans was- Will we see the return of Damon and Elena?
The love story between Elena and Damon wasn’t anything like a regular teenage drama. It had action, romance, fantasy, and an abundance of good looks. Back in 2009, when ‘The Vampire Diaries’ premiered, the industry was at a peak of a bullish market for vampire-related content, estimated at no less than $7 billion. Thus, “standing out” was the key.
Ian “Damon” Somerhalder talks about his ‘The Vampire Diaries’ audition
Speaking on “Sunrise“, Ian Somerhalder revealed how the chances of the show to make a comeback may be high, but chances of him coming back are slim to none.
“I think those shows are gone now, but if the people want vampire diaries to come back bad enough anything is possible, the fans have the power. ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is a show that’s building in viewership after the show has left the air. It’s an incredible new era of this”.
He conclusively added, “I couldn’t imagine me returning to ‘Lost’ or ‘The Vampire Diaries’, but I definitely love that these properties are still living in people’s homes and souls and their minds. It’s a very powerful time and I’m grateful for streaming and life after broadcast”.
Nina Dobrev also refused to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert in ‘The Vampire Diaries’. Both the leads refused to return. Rumours are that Nina and Ian’s off-screen affair had apparently caused trouble in Ian Somerhalder’s marriage with Nikki Reed.

Exploring theories and plotlines for a potential reboot
With the death of Paul Wesley’s Stefan, and Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev refusing to return, the reboot may presumably begin with a fresh storyline and a new cast.
Moreover, the show ended on a satisfactory note, tying up all the loose ends. Damon and Elena get married and have a kid. In their afterlife, Damon is united with his brother Stefan and Elena is united with her long-lost family.
In spite of no official confirmation, fans are hoping that the announcement of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ reboot happens soon.
