‘Gilmore Girls’ has been a fan-favourite show since the early 2000s. But, on viewing the show for some tenth time, I realized that one of the ‘Gilmore Girls’ might not be a fan-favourite anymore.
In a world that is battling a pandemic, people have been turning to things for comfort. And what shouts comfort more than early 2000s television? No matter how many times you’ve seen the show ‘Gilmore Girls’, revisiting it after a few years never feels like a bad idea. But, at what point in the show did you realise that all that shines is not actually gold?
- Rory is a gift that won’t stop taking from ‘Gilmore Girls’
- Rory not winning in the girlfriend department either
- Token best friend Lane, not really a Gilmore girl!
Well, if you’re slightly hassled by the questions thrown at you, were you also slightly hassled when you found that wrapped in shiny gift-paper was a character that went from slightly annoying to absolutely horrible in ‘Gilmore Girls’?
Fans of ‘Gilmore Girls’ have concluded that Rory is actually one of the most polarizing characters, especially after watching ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’, who only gets worse with age. Let’s break it down.
Rory is a gift that won’t stop taking from ‘Gilmore Girls’
The core which holds the show ‘Gilmore Girls’ together has always been that it was a show about imperfections. The juxtaposition between the perfect storybook-town of Stars Hollow and the imperfect and often compromising life of its residents- young single-mother Lorelai, and her daughter Rory, was what drew the audience in the first place.
And, while imperfection is what ‘Gilmore Girls’ is about, Rory’s character’s imperfections quite quickly becomes her defining character trait. At the age of 16, Rory might be one of the most driven and ambitious 16-year-old there is and even though she graduates high school, she never gives up her habit of putting herself and only herself first.
Lorelai, a young, single-mother, who gives up her freedom and adolescence to become a caregiver for Rory, was never appreciated enough by her daughter. Rory, on more occasions than one, cuts her mother off completely from her life based on small-arguments that don’t deserve this over-reaction, especially for someone who has sacrificed so much for her daughter.
Rory is not winning in the girlfriend department either!
While changing romantic preferences as you grow up isn’t unheard of, the way Rory handles her situation indicates how immature she really is. The first boy in Rory’s life, on ‘Gilmore Girls’, was Dean, the one with the boyish next-door charm and her first love, but they never connected intellectually.
Then came Jess, but Rory did not end things with Dean in a respectful way before starting thing up with Jess. Not to forget, Dean and Rory sleep together even though Dean is married, while Rory simply assumes that they are back together.
Being involved with Logan, who is engaged, while being unfaithful to her boyfriend Paul in ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ doesn’t hold well for her either. And maybe, monogamy isn’t Rory’s thing but she’d better let other people who are involved know that too.
Token best friend Lane, not really a Gilmore girl!
Yes, it was the early 2000s and if you were a person of colour in an all-white American show, it was mainly to be a token for representation.
But, the makers of ‘Gilmore Girls’ never hid the fact either or learnt from their past mistakes, it seems. In ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ too, the friendship between Lane and Rory is extremely one-sided. It is always about Rory’s problems and whatever Rory is going through and never the other way around.
And people might have let it slide, but Lane happens to be one of the most liked characters on ‘Gilmore Girls‘ and Rory being a bad friend to her is just not acceptable. An ungrateful daughter, immature girlfriend, and selfish best friend really doesn’t hold up well for Rory and, as we can see, her mistakes continue well into the later stages of her life too. Rory, you’ve really got some soul searching to do.
