Not only has season 5 of ‘Rick and Morty’ gone in production, but the show has also confirmed seven seasons of it to be released in the years to come.
The ‘Rick and Morty’ team is already working on season 7. Adult Swim Fest 2020 in mid-November confirmed that the show’s production is on track, even though we are still guessing on the release date. Unlike ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 3 and season 4, where we had to wait for more than two full years, we won’t have to wait nearly as long for season 5. Series co-creator Dan Harmon made a promise in a July 2019 interview that the wait between seasons “will never be this long again”. Justin Roiland, the fellow co-creator said that the production team was “rolling right into the next batch”. This supposedly means that work on season 5 began before season 4 even began airing.

Latest update on ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 5 release date
Most fans of ‘Rick and Morty’ expect long waits between seasons. The finale of the fourth season premiered on May 31, 2020. Since ‘Rick and Morty’ usually keep us waiting for 18 months or more, does that mean we’ll have to wait until November 2021? Well, that might not be the case this time because Dan Harmon, during a digital-only PaleyFest NY in October 2020, mentioned that productivity for the team has only increased during the pandemic.

He was quoted as saying,
“We’re more on schedule than we’ve ever been”. According to him, in this new kind of environment due to the pandemic, one can focus on the whole process since you don’t have this office environment anymore. “Everyone has to run this bee colony remotely, so the honey just gets made more consistently. It’s working for us”,
he said. He noted that besides season 5, he is already writing season 6, specifically the finale. In the same conversation, he confirmed that they might already be working on season 7.
If we look back at their past, mid-summer is the most popular time for their season premieres. Season 3 technically began with the surprise-airing of “The Rickshank Rickdemption” on April 1. Later, the third season of ‘Rick and Morty’ continued with “Rickmancing the Stone” that released on July 30, 2017. Two years back, the second season premiere, “A Rickle in Time”, released on Adult Swim on July 26, 2015.
Now, since season 4 premiered in November, we can’t really rely on past seasons to predict upcoming ones. So, in all likelihood, May 2021 feels like the best-case scenario.
Trailer updates of ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 5
Adult Swim did release a video calling it “First Look” during Adult Swim Con in late July 2020. But it is not a trailer from any angle. The clip shows Morty carrying a mortally wounded Rick on some celestial body, something like an asteroid. The animated video shows crystals floating by on some alien planet. It reflects the alt-reality versions of ‘Rick and Morty’. It includes one where they are vampire-fighting “Blades“. Later, Morty calls Jessica to confess his love, moments before they’re about to die by crashing into Earth. She suggests they hang out instead. This inspires him to make a successful crash-landing in the ocean.
The video should not be confused with a trailer. It is definitely not a trailer by any means. The animatic preview is an interesting way to pinpoint where production might be on the fifth season of ‘Rick and Morty’. We can expect some kind of legitimate trailer to be released sometime before the end of 2020.
What happened on ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 4?
Season 4 of ‘Rick and Morty’ brought back serialized elements like the Gromflomite Galactic Federation, Tammy, Birdperson, and Dr. Wong. The most interesting part was the introduction of a second Beth commonly referred to as “Space Beth“.
One of the episodes of season 3 hinted that Rick may have cloned Beth. But, now we have no way to know which one is a clone and which one is real Beth. Space Beth has become an important character on the show and is not going anytime soon. We can safely expect her to return and create chaos in season 5.
The ending to Rick and Morty season 4 also alienates Rick from the rest of the family, just like in the season 3 finale. Audiences, along with these characters, realises just how terrible a person Rick is yet again. When everyone is done and dusted on season 4 in the end, we find both versions of Beth deciding to stick around. The only major one remaining is Evil Morty who had a non-canon cameo in episode 6 and little else this season, as far as lingering plot threads are concerned.
Aside from Evil Morty, there’s a lot that could happen in season 5. We can expect the Talking Cat and Balthromaw the dragon teaming up. Moreover, Supernova from the Vindicators, Morty’s soul mate from “The Vat of Acid Episode” can also join the crew in the upcoming season.
How many episodes will there be in ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 5?
We can safely assume that the fifth season of ‘Rick and Morty’ will be 10 episodes long like most previous seasons.
