Patrick J. Adams, or as you may know him – Mike Ross (the lawyer on the bike), said goodbye to ‘Suits’ ahead of season 8. Why did Harvey’s prodigy decide against the show? We know, it was not his schedule!
It was as much a shock for the fans as it was for Harvey and Donna when Mike Ross legit decided to leave ‘Suits’ a little ahead of season 8. It seems like the decision was in its formative stage in the actor’s head for quite a while before he said it out loud. What was the real reason behind Patrick J. Adams’ decision to drop his suits?

Mike Ross said adios to ‘Suits’
Patrick J. Adams, who played the dreamy-eyed Mike Ross in ‘Suits’, chose to opt-out of the show after season 7 and there was no law known to man to stop him. Adams’ Mike biked around the streets of New York fighting lawsuits beside Harvey Specter for more than a hundred episodes. This was until he decided to get married to the love of his life, Rachel Zane, and move away to Seattle for fighting pro-bono cases. Granted, ‘Suits’ had had some prior experience with the departure of major characters like Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres), but the news of Mike Ross’ leave came out of the blue. The move on the part of Patrick J. Adams was highly unanticipated, more so, because Mike Ross along with Harvey Specter formed the crux of ‘Suits’.
In all fairness, there was not much left to explore about Mike’s character. His lack of a law degree was found out: so, that thrill was clearly gone. He rectified his situation, did time for being a fraud, and even passed the bar. He followed his dream of fighting pro-bono cases and settled down with Rachel despite all odds. Mike had exhausted his share of drama, which was enough to last us for a lifetime. Truth be told, there was nothing more to be done for Mike’s story arc, and it was time for both Mike and Adams to move on to their next act.
Why did Patrick J. Adams leave ‘Suits’?
One thing that we are certain of is that Patrick J. Adams did not decide to walk out on ‘Suits’ because of the clichéd scheduling problems. Self- admittedly, Adams was growing aware of the fact that Mike’s story was almost at its end. He claimed that the thought of leaving the show began taking shape in his head during season 6. Besides, Adams was not sure if Mike had anything more to contribute to the show’s story. On top of that, Meghan Markle was all set to become the new Duchess of Sussex, which confirmed the end of Rachel Zane. Given the Mike-Meghan chemistry, there was no point in pairing Adam’s character with someone else because who could top that, really!
Patrick J. Adams opened up to ‘The Hollywood Reporter‘ about his decision to leave ‘Suits’. On asking when, during season 7, did the decision to leave occur to him, he said, “Halfway through it. As we were starting to talk about renegotiating contracts [for season eight and beyond], I took a moment. Everybody was going full steam ahead and I stopped and said, “We need to think about this because this is more of my time and more of my life — and what’s the story left to tell? … I had this voice in my head that said that we’ve told his story and if he hangs out longer, Mike is just going to be another lawyer on television”.
Mike Ross returns for ‘Suits’ finale
It might have been the right decision to let Patrick J. Adams take leave from ‘Suits’, but he could have never not been at Harvey and Donna’s wedding! ‘Suits’ brought back Mike Ross for the finale because there was no way Aaron Korsh was going to drop the curtains without Mike showing his face for one last time. Korsh acknowledged both Adams and Mike as “the foundation of the show” and that his return was imperative.
For what it’s worth, Mike did not just come back; he did so with a bang. In one final twist, we see Mike slaying it in the court against Harvey and Samantha Wheeler. Patrick J. Adams admitted that being included in the final chapter of ‘Suits’ made him happy and excited given it was one last chance for Mike to stir up some action at the firm. However, he made no promises to return the suits he had stolen at the time of leaving the show.
