That’s right! If there’s one character that we think deserves to be called the main character in ‘The Big Bang Theory’, it has definitely got to be Raj Koothrappali.
If you’re a TBBT fan, it will come as no news to you that Sheldon Cooper has always, we mean always, taken the center stage throughout its twelve seasons. But what most fans seemed to have missed out on is that if there was no Raj Koothrappali, the show would not have been the way it actually turned out to be. Not to say the other characters weren’t equally important, but Koothrappali was the MVP of the show. Let’s have a look at why no one but Raj is actually the main character of ‘The Big Bang Theory’.
- Raj grew better without the women
- The group would’ve been pretty boring without him
- Raj Koothrappali was a true survivor
Raj grew better without the women
Sheldon, Penny, Leonard, Howard, and Raj are often known as ‘The Big Bang Theory’ main characters. Not to say that the secondary characters like Bernadette and Amy were any less important, but if you’re a TBBT fan, you’ll know that Raj was the real deal out of the whole lot. From being selectively mute at the beginning of the series to making the American dream come true for himself, Koothrappali presented many sides to his story that continued to be enthralling till the very end of the show.
Fans of the Indian astrophysicist know that Raj Koothrappali had quite the rotten luck when it came to women. Every time he was approached by a woman, his selective muteness got the worst of him. After several trial and errors with alcohol and prescribed drugs, and a break up with one of his exes, he found his mojo and spoke effortlessly to women.
While overcoming his medical condition opened up opportunities for the character to explore his relationships with women, Raj continued to have bad luck in that department. But the upside was that the audience got to witness Koothrappali’s growth without a partner. I mean, no one but Raj had the kind of passion for showmanship and stars that viewers absolutely enjoyed watching. Take Sheldon Cooper for example. Oh, how hard did he try to teach physics at Caltech and to Penny, but failed miserably?
Even though casual sex worked more often than he thought it would, a long term relationship was never meant to be. Desperate times called for desperate measure and he had to lean on his father to help find a suitable match. Even though Koothrappali did find what could’ve been his “happily ever after”, things with Anu certainly didn’t last, leaving Raj single till the season finale.
The group would’ve been pretty boring without him
A popular opinion of the series is that among the main characters of ‘The Big Bang Theory’, Sheldon is the smarter one on the show, but what most of the fans miss out on is that Raj Koothrappali is the funnier character on ’The Big Bang Theory’. Whether it is Raj’s indecent comments that he’d make after he’s had a little too much to drink or perhaps when Koothrappali gave the funniest best man’s speech at Howard and Bernadette’s wedding, the audience did ROFL pretty hard.
Had it not been for Raj’s comic talent and affection towards his friends, specifically Howard, the group would’ve been just another circle of nerdy-scientist-gaming-geeks who also happened to have a decent love life with their respective partners.
No series can survive without a little diversity in play. And, of course, Raj was the man. Ironically enough, he wasn’t the biggest fan of his heritage and enjoyed living the American dream to the fullest. No Raj also meant no Priya. Had that been the case, Leonard’s story would’ve been so different. Most importantly, Raj Koothrappali’s “metrosexuality” gave the audience a reason to question and debate over whether Raj was really gay or not.
Koothrappali was a true survivor
The almost 40-year-old astrophysicist and planetarium show narrator was a mama and papa’s boy. Unlike the rest of the gang, Raj was away from his parents for most of the 12 seasons. It wasn’t until season 8 that his father took a flight down to Pasadena to visit his son. From being a nobody in a foreign country to being the main man of the group, the character really made a mark everywhere he went.
Throughout the series, Raj was seen being in constant contact with his parents. One might say he was quite the spoiled adult as he continued to receive an allowance even though he had a good enough job that presumably paid well. However, it wasn’t until season 10 that he put an end to the allowance.
While his muteness might have not made him lucky with the women, Raj certainly found his voice at work and with his friends. Speaking of work, do you remember when Koothrappali’s visa expired and that led to him losing his job? He fought against all odds and began working for Sheldon. Is he a true survivor or what?
Who according to you is the main character on the show? Do you think Raj’s character was strong enough to have a prequel or sequel about his story? Do you think it was right of Howard to influence Raj to not go to London with Anu? Let us know in the comment section below.
