New PM, Boris Jhonson, appointed her as the Secretary of State for the Home Department
Priti Patel is an ardent Brexiteer. So much so that she is listed among the most vocal critics of Theresa May’s strategy for Brexit. On Wednesday, Patel became Britain’s first Indian-origin Home Secretary. She is of Gujarati-origin and is seen as an avid supporter of Indian PM Narendra Modi. But all is not well in the UK with this appointment.

Subsequently, the official Twitter handle of 10 Downing Street made the announcement. The tweet was captioned, “The Rt Hon Priti Patel @patel4witham has been appointed Secretary of State for the Home Department @ukhomeoffice“
But while it is a news that is making Indians ‘proud,’ Twitter tells a very different story. Yes, Priti Patel is the “first” Home Secretary of an Indian-origin, and that is an achievement in itself. But not all are welcoming her with the same enthusiasm and appreciation.
In fact, Priti Patel is being accused of many things. These include “reintroducing the death penalty” and her forced resignation from the post of International Developmental Secretary in 2017.
