- Why the series was so successful
The protagonist Tony Soprano, a mob boss and a caring family man, can make the viewer detest him and empathize with him at the same time! The series premiered in 1999, ushering in a new era of television, with stellar performances and flawless writing.
It’s safe to say that if the show were to return in any form, a reunion or otherwise, it would be well-received! ‘The Sopranos’ made way for other shows that featured anti-hero personas, but it embodied everything a crime drama should.
The story behind the hit HBO series is being revisited in ‘The Many Saints Of Newark‘, a film that will serve as a prequel to ‘The Sopranos’. It’ll jump back to the ’60s, and will be set around the time of the Newark riots.
The network has also teased the possibility of a new season of ‘The Sopranos’, which fans are thrilled about.
All about ‘The Sopranos’ prequel
‘The Sopranos’ prequel movie is being spearheaded by series creator David Chase, who wrote the script with screenwriter Laurence Konner. The two will also produce the film, which will capture the life of young Tony Soprano, played by Michael Gandolfini.
Award-winning actor James Gandolfini, who popularized the role of Tony Soprano, died in 2013, so his son Michael will carry his legacy forward in the prequel. Titled ‘The Many Saints of Newark’, the prequel will follow Tony as a teenager and chronicle the events that led to his involvement in the Italian-American mafia.

The film will bring back Tony’s father Giovanni (Johnny Boy), who was the local mob boss before Tony and his uncle took over. Originally set to release in September 2020, the film is now being pushed to March next year, due to filming restrictions.
HBO teases a new season after ‘The Sopranos’ prequel
While a prequel movie is exciting news for fans of ‘The Sopranos’, an entirely new series would be even better! It’d intrigue a new generation of viewers and acquaint them with the extraordinary story of Tony Soprano and his family.
There’s some good news surrounding a new season of the show because HBO isn’t opposed to the idea. During an interview with “Deadline” at the Television Critics Association last year, Casey Bloys; HBO’s President of Programming teased a new season.
The possibility of the mob drama being revived could be a reality soon. “Never say never”, he shared with “Deadline” last year. He added,
“There is nothing on the table at the moment but I will stay open”.
It’s hard to imagine a revival of the series without mafia boss James Gandolfini himself, but fans have some ideas. His son Michael could follow in his footsteps and honour his legacy by starring in the show … even better if it is a prequel!
Why the series was so ground-breaking
The show’s success has often been credited to actor James Gandolfini’s depiction of Tony Soprano. An anti-hero for the ages, the character is a deeply flawed man who balances his work and personal life in the most intriguing way.
It made achievements in cinematography which brought cinema to viewer’s television screens. It was a movie more than a television series and set a precedent for the network. For those who enjoy crime dramas and stories about the Italian-American mafia with themes of crime, ‘The Sopranos’ is it.
It’s realistic and never relied on a single character, which means every cast member played an integral role in its success. It delivered satire, anger, and saw Tony Soprano wage battles against himself, he caused by himself. You might find this perplexing, but the series has often been regarded to have been factually correct and an accurate depiction of mafia families. It’s perhaps why the series enjoys a ground-breaking status even today.
