The series usually brings fans their yearly fix of Miriam “Midge” Maisel’s comedic hilarity during the holiday season, but 2020 was different. Initially scheduled to go into production last summer and after being postponed indefinitely, ‘Mrs. Maisel’ Season 4 isn’t a dream anymore!
“Deadline” recently reported that the season has begun filming in New York! The season 4 renewal announcement came as no surprise to fans and critics after the show’s successful stint in the awards season. Since the series is filming already, when can we expect to see it premiere?
Will creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and producer Daniel Palladino break their favourite tradition by releasing the fourth season before December? Or will season 4 arrive in time for the Christmas season later this year? Keep reading to find out!
Sherman-Palladino reveals the plot for ‘Mrs Maisel’ Season 4
If you don’t remember much about what happened in season 3, allow us to refresh your memory. Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) was working as the opening act on singer Shy Baldwin’s (Leroy McClain) tour before a major career setback appeared.
Midge faced a real professional blow after she accidentally outed Shy Baldwin, being the only person who knew his secret. Intimidated by the idea of opening for a big pop star, Midge’s comedic set leans too far into homophobia which gets her fired by Baldwin.
In the brutal closing moments of the finale, Midge and Susie (Alex Borstein) arrive at the airport, where they’re informed of being fired. To add to that, Midge discovers that Shy doesn’t want her to speak to him ever again. It’s a turning point in Midge’s life and a real professional blow for her, and we’ll learn more about it in ‘Mrs. Maisel’ Season 4.
Sherman-Palladino previously told “The Hollywood Reporter” that Midge’s popularity would only grow each season.
“Her personal journey is really what the show is about and so it’s not really a spoiler to say, ‘Oh, by the way, she’s going to be famous or she’s going to be successful.’ This show is really about how her shifting dynamic affects her family, her husband. It’s really about all of those personal dynamics.”
The series will delve into the 1960s and fans expect Susie’s gambling problems to also create tons of drama. We just hope Midge is able to make amends with Shy Baldwin, for the sake of their friendship at least.
Which cast members will return in season 4?
We don’t know much about Midge’s future prospects in season 4, but we do know which cast members will return! Rachel Brosnahan will certainly greet us again as the charming, persuasive, and hilarious Midge Maisel.
Small-time comedy manager Susie Myerson will be played by Alex Borstein once again! Sherman-Palladino has reportedly modelled the character after the real-life Hollywood agent, Sue Mengers. It was because Mengers was the most formidable agent and maybe that’s the route her character will follow in the future.
Michael Zegen will return as Joel Maisel, Midge’s parents Rose and Abe will be played by Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub. Luke Kirby returns as Lenny Bruce and Joel’s love interest Mei Lin aka actor Stephanie Hsu will make a comeback too! There hasn’t been any confirmation on Shy Baldwin’s character yet but since he’s crucial to the story, it’s obvious he’ll be there.
When will ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Season 4 release?
We can’t wait to meet our favourite comedienne again, but since filming has just started, there’s no telling when. The last two seasons have arrived in time for the big holiday season in December, so fans have been speculating the tradition will continue.
Midge took her country by storm in the last season, while on tour with Shy Baldwin. She has a bright future ahead, and we’re sure to see her growing popularity in the coming years! Season 4 will rely on heavy CGI instead of the usual which involves hiring hundreds of extras so filming could finish sooner than planned. Fans are confident that Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino are working hard to ensure ‘Mrs. Maisel’ Season 4 premieres in December!
