David Chase’s HBO crime drama ‘The Sopranos’ has found its way into the hall of fame of good TV series and become a cultural icon. The show had first aired in 1999 on HBO and ran for a total of 6 seasons; 86 episodes in total till the year 2007.

The series won an astounding number of awards including but not limited to 21 Primetime Emmy Awards and 5 Golden Globes. The show recently created some buzz when David Chase confirmed that he is working on a prequel movie based on the series. It is supposed to be set in the 60s amidst the background of Newark protests and will star the son of James Gandolfini (the actor who played Tony Soprano), Michael Gandolfini, as a younger Tony.
In an interview with a major Hollywood magazine, Chase had stated his doubts about any potential reboot of the original series but had been optimistic about a prequel series or movie set before the events of the main TV series.

What will the prequel movie be about?
The new movie ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ will serve as a prequel to the events of ‘The Sopranos’. The movie will take us to New Jersey, particularly Newark, where a young Tony Soprano grew up in the 1960s.
Not only were the 60s the heydays of Italian-American mafias of New York and New Jersey but they were also teeming with racial tensions and conflicts.
The movie will be set in the backdrop of riots and fighting between African-Americans and Italian-Americans in the streets of New Jersey. The movie will be a crime drama just like its mother series and will also feature several of the show’s original characters.

Casey Boyles said in an interview with “Deadline”, “I keep saying never say never”. He added, “There are no plans, there are no discussions about it, but [Michael Gandolfini] is a really good actor, we had him on ‘The Deuce’. There is nothing on the table at the moment but I will stay open”.
What was the show ‘The Sopranos’ about?
At the centre stage of this iconic series was Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), a New Jersey mob boss who finds himself atop the crumbling empire of Italian mafias and inside a psychotherapist’s office. The story starts with Tony gaining an upper hand against his uncle and securing his position as the head of the mob family while also suffering frequent panic attacks.
The show’s central theme is the recurring reminder of the past glory of the mafia and its present pathetic state while also extending it as a metaphor for the entire United States.

Who will star in the movie?
Joining Michael Gandolfini will be several stars namely- Alessandro Nivola (Dickie Moltisanti, father of Christopher Moltisanti), Leslie Odom Jr, Jon Bernthal (Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano), Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro, Michael De Rossi, Ray Liotta, Vera Farmiga (Livia Soprano), Joey Diaz, and Nick Vallelonga among others.
The movie ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ will see Tony Soprano return to the screen but this time he’ll be played by the son of the original late actor James Gandolfini.
