It was unbelievable how the Netflix show based on a Pulitzer-Prize-winning-article showcased the stories of survivors of sexual abuse. The aftereffects of such abuse are a thing no series talked about before. Netflix’s Unbelievable will be coming with more episodes.
Netflix’s Unbelievable will be coming out with more new episodes after a successfully told story of sexual abuse victims. Yes, many activists talk about how rape is an evil crime. But Netflix’s Unbelievable puts out a vivid picture of how a rape victim’s life changes— and how nothing ever remains the same. Rape is not just sexual abuse, it is mental too. Young Marie’s story gave viewers goosebumps and many came forward with their own ordeal.

The story narrated in the 2019 Netflix show is based on a 2015 article titled ‘An Unbelievable Story of Rape’. A collaboration of two non-profit organizations, the article later won the Pulitzer Prize for Extraordinary Reporting in 2016 (among other notable awards).
An Unbelievable Story
If Netflix hadn’t chosen to picturise Marie’s story after the young teenager got abused, we probably never would have known what the words ‘rape victim’ really mean. The story traced every step of a rape investigation gone horribly wrong. The police pressurises 18-year-old Marie to accept that her rape charges are false. And the young teenager gives in after a long fight.
Later the show puts Marie’s rape investigation in stark contrast with another rape investigation. A female detective follows this investigation brilliantly and with sensitivity. The directors and writers did such a commendable job of putting together the story over the 8 episodes that it was easy for viewers to grasp the harsh reality of why some women never come forward to report rape.

The trauma that is faced when the victim is forced to re-live the rape every time she narrates it is what makes the rape even more horrendous than it already is. Apart from that, there is the mental trauma of adjusting in society with a constant feeling of mistrust.
Netflix’s Unbelievable showed every aspect of rape.
In fact, the show portrayed the aspects with such precision that the viewers instantly started expecting for new episodes to the show.
Coming out of the fears
Unlike other TV shows, Unbelievable is not a dramatic representation of true stories. To know that some woman actually faced all these terrors — makes the TV show an eye-opener. Moreover, thanks to the sensitivity that Netflix’s Unbelievable showed to the serial rape victims from 2008-2011, more women are willing to come forward with their own horror tales.

In just four weeks from its release, 32 million viewers binge-watched all the new episodes of Netflix’s Unbelievable. This number shows the intensity of the effect the show must have had. Women with similar stories came forward. It was never easy to come forward with the fear of how they might be mistreated, questioned and never receive justice. But then they saw all these fears sensitively dealt with on the show. And subsequently, it seemed they too could have justice just like Marie.
New Episodes of Unbelievable are coming to Netflix
Not only this but the showrunner, Susannah Grant, hinted at new episodes or seasons to Netflix’s show ‘Unbelievable’. In an interview with the EW, she explained that initially, the makers had no plans in place to extend the series. There would have been no stories beyond the one season that went live on Netflix in September 2019.
“It felt like a very clear, really great story to tell. A really important story to tell, and I just think it reaches a really satisfying resolution”. But she extended the idea that she would love to film other stories of women who have experienced the terror of being raped followed by waiting for justice. Susannah Grant continued, “I don’t feel a desire to tell more of this story; I feel a desire to tell other stories.”
A world with more hope for justice
Many women came forward and now want their stories to be told. And thus, there will be new episodes coming to Netflix’s Unbelievable.
What we have seen till now, are probably just a fraction of the many waves of abuse that the sexual abuse victims face.
There is a world of women silently waiting for justice with almost no hope for it. Netflix’s Unbelievable might prove to be the answer they are all looking for.
