‘The Office’ is almost synonymous with Micheal Scott. Can he really not be there for its season finale?
When you think of ‘The Office’, the first person to come to mind is likely going to be Michael Scott, even if you haven’t seen the show in your life. Played brilliantly by Steve Carell, the character has taken a life of his own so much so that it is actually a surprise that he didn’t get a spin-off of his own. About the lives and loves of the employees of an ordinary American workplace, ‘The Office’ could not have been ‘The Office’ without Michael Scott, and yet it was, for not one but two whole seasons. Following Carell’s exit in season 7, the character was written off and given something of a happy ending: Micheal gets engaged to Holly and they both move away from Scranton and Dunder Mifflin. The show was not the same after the actor left it, and there were many hopes that he would return to ‘The Office’ Season 9, the show’s last.

Why Steve Carell left the show
When Steve Carell really left the show, it broke the hearts of fans and its impact was noticeable in the fluctuating ratings of the subsequent seasons. While there have been rumours and theories about why the actor decided to call it quits, most of which have revolved around the actor wanting to focus on his film career, new revelations in the form of a book give further insight. The big reveal? Carell didn’t want to leave in the first place.
In the book “The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s” by Andy Greene, claims have been made that the reason Micheal had to be written off was because of the vagueness of the network’s powers-that-be. When Carell voiced out a thought in an interview that season 7 could be his last, he didn’t get the response he wanted, which made him think that perhaps it was time to leave. Moreover, when it was time for Carell’s contract to end, which was by the close of season 7, there were no talks of renewing it from the network’s end. And so, it wasn’t, and Carell left the show!
How Steve Carell almost didn’t return
Carell, however, graciously Steve came back for a small cameo at the end of ‘The Office’ Season 9. But even that almost didn’t happen! In the last two episodes of season 9, we see Dwight and Angela’s wedding taking place. This gave way for a kind of reunion for characters from the show and thus allowed Micheal to also join in. However, when Carell was asked if he would make a comeback in season 9, he fervently declined, saying that it just wouldn’t make sense for the character of Micheal. Even Greg Daniels, the series creator, said that he wouldn’t make an appearance in the final episode.
While the final season was airing, fans were still hoping that Carell would relent, but nothing was confirmed. So until the very last moment, everybody concerned — including the cast members, and fans — were not sure if he was going to feature. You can then imagine the kind of wonderful surprise everybody was in for when Steve Carell did turn up, joining the cast for the one and last time, and giving ‘The Office’ a proper, teary send-off. We like to believe that the happy tears in the cast members’ eyes were real.
