After playing Sheldon for 12 years, Jim Parsons must be feeling pretty great after being applauded by Meryl Streep for his new role.
CBS Studios made history as The Big Bang Theory went on to become the network’s longest-running sitcom. The series featured four characters who eventually became television’s favourite geeks. The sitcom received its share of love and hate. But at the end of the day, we’d choose the company of these four nerdy geniuses any time.
- TBBT Season 13 almost happened
- Season 13 and 14 to be filmed without Cooper?
- Meryl Streep thinks Parsons is brilliant in his new role
The star cast includes Jim Parsons (Sheldon), Johnny Galecki (Leonard), Kunal Nayyar (Raj), Simon Helberg (Howard) and Kaley Cuoco (Penny). Sheldon and Leonard are physicists at Caltech while Raj is an astrophysicist. Howard is an aerospace engineer and the only one in the gang without a PhD. The one thing that the entire squad has in common is their love for comics and pop-culture.
However one chooses to define ‘nerd culture’ and if TBBT popularised it, you must realise that Sheldon and his gang had several positive influences on us. How can we forget the episodes that exposed us to real-life scientific concepts? From Sheldon’s classical conditioning experiment on Penny to his Doppler Effect costume, TBBT often brought up conversations revolving around science.
Jim Parsons has moved on from his TBBT character, stopped season 13 from happening and even got applauded by Meryl Streep along the way. Continue reading to find out how.
TBBT Season 13 almost happened
The series was to be renewed for two more seasons after season 12 that premiered last year. Creator Chuck Lorre wanted to continue exploring how the lives of our favourite nerds would be. The network initially announced that TBBT would get a renewal. Everything changed in just two weeks when Jim Parsons confessed he wouldn’t be returning for another season.
Parsons talked all about his decision to quit playing Sheldon Cooper in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said, “I guess at a personal level, it feels like the right time in my life. I’m firmly in my middle age now. I don’t know how much longer I can wear [the T-shirts] without looking really long in the tooth. In a way, it’s exciting. What is this next chapter of life? What is this next chapter for all of us? It will be very, very sad when it does end, even knowing [I am] okay with it.”
Parting from TBBT was a difficult decision for Parsons, but there’s only so long you can play a certain character. He did pour his heart out in an Instagram post though.
Season 13 and 14 to be filmed without Cooper?
Since Sheldon is imperative to the success of the show, Chuck Lorre and CBS decided to end the series. Continuing the show without him didn’t feel right, considering his tremendous character arc as the anti-social physicist. It would be strange to see a new season that didn’t feature Sheldon Cooper’s antics and hilarious monologues.
But, at least the series has a spin-off for fans to look forward to. Young Sheldon stars the talented Ian Armitage as Sheldon Cooper and it has already been renewed for two more seasons. It chronicles Sheldon’s life when he goes to high school, and is most likely to continue until he graduates college.
Fans have noticed a trap of differences between TBBT and its spin-off, but it has mostly received positive reviews. Maybe CBS has another spin-off in the pipeline? We’ll have to wait and watch.
Jim Parsons has finally moved on from his t-shirt wearing role and taken up an unexpected one. It may have surprised fans but acting heavyweight Meryl Streep thought he was brilliant as a villain. And when a three-time Oscar winning actress thinks you’re brilliant, there’s no going back for TBBT.
Meryl Streep thinks Parsons is brilliant in his new role
We bet Jim Parsons is feeling pretty chuffed after earning an Emmy-nomination for his first role after the conclusion of TBBT. Parsons plays talent agent and sexual predator Henry Wilson in the Netflix series Hollywood, whose clients included Rock Hudson. The seven-episode miniseries is set in a post-World War II Hollywood and stars Darren Criss, Patti LuPone and Dylan McDermott among others.
Hope for a TBBT season 13 were crushed when co-creator Ryan Murphy showed Meryl Streep one of Jim’s dance scenes. She was seriously blown away.
In an interview with Metro, Ryan explained: “Jim choreographed the entire drag dance scene himself, and got a huge round of applause from the crew. I was filming The Prom [the upcoming musical] with Meryl Streep when I got the footage of that scene and I could not believe how good it was. I showed it to Meryl and she was like, ‘Oh my God, this is brilliant.’”
When Meryl Streep thinks your performance is brilliant, it is what it is. Guess we can officially say goodbye to any possibility of TBBT season 13. Jim Parsons doesn’t need to be a comic-loving, geeky physicist to shine in Hollywood anymore.
