Right from the beginning, Donna has been the heart and soul of the show.
‘Suits‘ was one of the longest-running fan-favourite shows of all time, and for a good part of its course, it was embroiled in controversy — of the good kind. Around season 7 of the show, one of its main leads, Meghan Markle, who played the character of Rachel Zane, announced her engagement to Prince Harry. Her engagement and eventual marriage meant that Meghan Markle had to be written out of ‘Suits’, which led to a confused outcry from fans who were both happy for the actress and tremendously sad that she was out of the show. Rumours abounded that Markle would return for just one more episode, but they were all unfounded. To the effect that in both the Rachel-less seasons, the character never made an appearance.

But the show still did well enough, and we are tempted to think there was another lucky charm around that took the series to its completion with nine seasons, still as one of the top-rated shows. And who could this lucky charm be other than Donna Paulsen, who is the very heart and soul of the entire show!
‘Suits’ stood strong, even after Meghan Markle left
When Meghan Markle left the show, some critics were skeptical about the future of the show. Gina Torres, who played one of the leads Jessica Pearson, had already departed the series at the end of six seasons. Markle’s exit meant that Mike Ross had to go too. This meant that out of the six main leads on the show, three were gone. The real ‘Suits’ family was now effectively halved. But the show still didn’t fall apart! Courtesy, Donna Paulsen.
How Donna proved herself to be central to the show
Donna was not only at the heart of the firm, she was also at the heart of the show. Always at the top of things, she knew what was going on. It was almost scary the way she could read people, and even know what they were going to say before they said it. She is sharp, calculating, and direct, but those are the things that make her lovable.
She was a legal secretary, but she controlled the firm and even ran it. She provided everyone what they needed and was loyal to those she loved, but if someone crossed her they wouldn’t make it unscathed. Starting out as a secretary, she did not lay down her career goals there and worked her way up to becoming the COO of the company. She also ensured she got to marry the man she wanted.
She is the true spirit of the show. Wouldn’t you agree? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
