From the Rambeaus to Nick Fury’s eye – every change MCU made to Captain Marvel movie from the comic
Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female superhero Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has come to be after many transformations. To start with the mantle Captain Marvel does not belong to one character but many. In the beginning, Captain Mar-vell was conceived as a male superhero. Then his ally Carol Danvers picked up the mantle. Furthermore, Ms Marvel turned into Captain Marvel and on occasion, Monica Rambeau aka Photon also took up the mantle.
However, in 2019 when Marvel Studios developed the character for the big screen they made some significant changes. The character they chose to introduce was Carol Danvers making Captain Marvel first female-led movie of the studio. Director duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck along with Marvel head Kevin Feige and actor Brie Larson built a character that little girls could use as a role model.
Here are 5 ways Captain Marvel evolved in movies from its comic origins:

Captain Marvel Brought Feminism At Forefront
From all directions Marvel championed ‘feminist’ stance of this movie. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is strong both mentally and physically. If you compare all the changes from comics to movie they have only enhanced the feminist aspect of the culture. For example, Carol’s emotional relationship is show with her friend Maria Rambeau and not with a man.

Mar-vell’s Gender Swap
Another significant change that Marvel brought was with the casting of Annett Bening as Mar-Vell/Supreme Intelligence. Mar-Vell in the comic is a man named Walter Lawson. He is the original torchbearer of the comics’ namesake Captain Mar-Vell. In the past, Marvel faced backlash for swapping gender of Doctor Strange’s Ancient One the studio nonetheless took the same decision with the legendary hero.

History of Rambeaus
As mentioned before Maria Rambeau played by Lashana Lynch is Carol Danvers’ best friend and a fighter pilot and also mother to Monica Rambeau. The movie however, changes the Rambeau legacy here. Monica who grows up to take on the mantle of Photon and Captain Marvel itself – something we would see unfolding in the MCU future. Nonetheless, in comic, Monica’s mother Maria is a seamstress and dressmaker having no ties with Carol.

How Nick Fury Lost An Eye?
For about a decade fandom only wondered who could come so close to Nick Fury to take away an eye. He famously said, “The last time I trusted a person I lost an eye!” Till Captain Marvel told us otherwise! In the movie Fury lost his eye to a Flerkin aka Goose the cat. However, in The Ultimates comic, Nick Fury lost his eye in the Gulf war – no Flerkins in sight!

Kree-Skrull Storyline
Significantly, the major difference between Captain Marvel movie and comics is its central Kree and Skrull conflict. In the comic the Kree-Skrull war is very grey everyone is doing wrong things for the greater good of their own kind. However, the MCU makes a clear distinction between who is good and bad in this Kree-Skrull war. The Skrulls are shown to be fighting for a new home whereas Krees are shown the wrongdoers for both Carol as well as the Skrulls.
How Carol Danvers will Evolve In Captain Marvel 2?
While Carol has had two major appearances in her origin story and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, a sequel is much awaited. Two new characters Ms Marvel [Iman Vellani] and Monica Rambeau [Tyonah Parris] will join Captain Marvel in the upcoming sequel. The Secret Invasion announced for Disney+ further taps into Kree-Skrull War and consequences of it can be seen in Captain Marvel 2.
